Florida International RB played in 11 games in 2018 with a warrant out for his arrest

Florida International running back Shawndarrius Phillips was arrested Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in August.

Phillips was booked Wednesday by the Pembroke Park police department on a domestic battery by strangulation charge. The charge stems from an alleged incident with an ex-girlfriend in June. From the Miami Herald:

The probable cause affidavit says Phillips’ ex-girlfriend called Broward Sheriff’s Office on June 17. She said a discussion about who she was dating a month after their breakup turned physical when Phillips, who lists at 5-foot-10 and 225 pounds, began choking her with his right hand.

As she struggled to speak or even breathe, she said, “Phillips got her on her feet and walked her back towards his couch until she fell back on the couch,” according to the affidavit.

He then threatened to break her jaw if she didn’t leave, she told police. The warrant was issued for Phillips’ arrest on Aug. 24, a week before the 2018 season began. That means he played the entire 2018 season while a warrant was out.

The looming warrant didn’t affect Phillips’ playing time in 2018. He appeared in 11 of FIU’s 12 games in 2018 and was the team’s second-leading rusher with 393 rushing yards.

FIU declined to comment to the Herald on Phillips’ status for the Bahamas Bowl against Toledo on Dec. 21. He is still, as of Friday morning, listed as a member of the FIU football roster.
