Five things to know about former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson

The Cincinnati Bengals announced their newest Ring of Honor inductees. Quarterback Boomer Esiason and receiver Chad Johnson are set to become the seventh and eighth members during an induction ceremony at halftime of the Bengals' Sep. 25 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Both on the field and off, Johnson had quite the personality. His touchdown celebrations and trash talk were backed up by his play (he currently holds franchise records with 10,783 yards, 751 receptions and 66 touchdowns). Off the field, his antics extend to horse racing and reality television.

For the man formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, here are five things to know about the newest Ring of Honor inductee.

1. He once raced a horse

Cincinnati professional athletes have a short but entertaining history of competing with four-legged creatures. Before the 1990 World Series, Reds second baseman Billy Bates raced a cheetah at Riverfront Stadium. Before the 2007 season, Johnson announced that he was going to race a horse.

The competition took place at River Downs with a horse named Restore the Roar running one-eighth of a mile and Johnson running 1/16th of a mile. Johnson used his speed to beat the horse fairly easily, something former Bengals receiver Cris Collinsworth couldn't do in a similar event in 1983.

The race was open to the public, with all money raised going toward the Marvin Lewis Community Fund and Feed the Children.

2. His daughter will run track at the University of Kentucky

Cha'iel Johnson recently graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She boasts personal bests of 25.05 seconds in the 200 meters, 55.15 seconds in the 400 meters, and 2:07.83 in the 800 meters. She also won the 800 meters at the Florida Class 4A state meet.

She committed to the Wildcats on June 13.

3. He played college football with multiple NFL stars

Johnson's college career began at Santa Monica College, where he played with Steve Smith. Smith spent two years at Santa Monica before transferring to Utah. His 16-year NFL career included stints with the Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens.

Johnson spent three years at Santa Monica before transferring to Oregon State, where he teamed up with future Bengals teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh. In one season together, the pair combined for 1,464 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Beavers went 11-1 in 2000 and defeated Notre Dame in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. After nine years in Cincinnati, Houshmandzadeh spent one year each with the Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders.

4. He has appeared on multiple reality TV shows

Johnson's first foray into reality TV came in 2010 when he was a contestant on 'Dancing with the Stars'. He was paired with professional dancer Cheryl Burke and was one of the final four pairs before being eliminated.

When the Bengals signed Terrell Owens for the 2010 season, he teamed up with Johnson on and off the field. The 'T. Ocho Show' aired on Versus from Oct. 2010 until Feb. 2011. The show featured segments where the two would review their old tweets and take questions from Kevin Frazier about a wide range of topics. They also hosted guests like former Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu.

Johnson also had his own show on VH1 called "Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch'. Similar to 'The Bachelor', the show followed Johnson, then known as Chad Ochocinco, on a quest to find love. The show ran for 10 episodes in the summer of 2010 and featured fellow NFL players like Owens and Bernard Berrian.

5. He is an avid soccer fan

Any fan that follows Johnson on Twitter or has interacted with him knows that he plays EA Sports' FIFA religiously. Similar to his playing days, he welcomes a challenge from anyone, often saying he will take the victory before the game is played.

Johnson played soccer as a kid and even returned to the game during his NFL career. During the league's lockout in 2011, he tried out for Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City. Johnson played in a reserve game but never signed a contract.

Johnson also played for Boca Raton FC of the United Premier Soccer League in 2018 and 2019 and was a TV analyst for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Johnson's soccer skills came in handy when he kicked an extra point in a 2009 preseason game against the New England Patriots.
