Five Star Conference girls weightlifting: Spruce Creek sweeps Olympic, traditional events

Spruce Creek scored victories in both the Olympic and traditional team events Wednesday to sweep the Five Star Conference girls weightlifting championships in Orange City.

Ava Jowdy (unlimited), a state-runner up last year, and Bella Cobb (129 pounds) both claimed double golds for the Hawks in their respective weight classes. Senior Alliyah Mills (169 Olympic) and juniors Jana Holston (119 Olympic) and Alyssa McDaniels (139 traditional) each scored an individual victory, as well.

"I'm really proud of this group. Flagler's girls have been so good for a while, so hats off to (Duane) Hagstrom and his group," Hawks coach David Nelson said. "The girls did a great job, and a lot of them have been progressing every week."

Three Flagler Palm Coast weightlifters prevailed in the Olympic discipline, which scores snatch and clean-and-jerk lifts. Madeline Brinker (101), Leila Turner (139) and Sherlande Paul (154) each won by 10 pounds or more.

New Smyrna Beach's pair of defending state champions — Olivia Bond-West (183) and Asha Mahri-Manzueta (199) — cruised in their weight classes to win in both Olympic and traditional. Bond-West posted 400-plus totals in both disciplines, and Mahri-Manzueta had the day's highest score, 440 pounds, in the traditional event.

Franchesca Gonzalez also shined for the Barracudas with a pair of conference golds in the 110 weight division.
