FC Cincinnati signs former DC United, Atlanta midfielder Yamil Asad

As it turned out, Argentine midfielder Yamil Asad's training sessions with FC Cincinnati were more than a courtesy extended by the club. After practicing with FC Cincinnati at its suburban complex for a week, Asad was confirmed Thursday as the club's newest signing.

Asad, 29, joins first-place FC Cincinnati through the end of the 2024 season with an option for 2025. Asad was scheduled be available for FC Cincinnati "2" in a Thursday night match at Northern Kentucky University, according to FC Cincinnati staff writer Carter Chapley.

“Yamil brings a great amount of experience and quality to FC Cincinnati,” Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati general manager, said in a news release. “He’s a creative and versatile player who will be a good fit with our group and I’d like to welcome him to the club.”

D.C. United midfielder Yamil Asad (11) is attacked by FC Cincinnati forward Yuya Kubo (7) and defender Geoff Cameron (12) in the second half of the MLS match between FC Cincinnati and D.C. Asad scored 21 goals and added 26 assists in 122 MLS appearances with D.C. United and Atlanta United FC, including the first-ever goal in Atlanta history.

Asad spent parts of four of the past six seasons with D.C. United. In 2023, he made 26 appearances across all competitions, making nine starts including twice in the U.S. Open Cup, netting D.C.’s game-winning goal against Richmond Kickers in the third round.

At Atlanta United, Asad scored the first-ever goal in club history.

Asad's time around FC Cincinnati first started March 21 during a training session. At the time, his presence was described to The Enquirer as an opportunity to train and maintain fitness - a courtesy the club had previously extended to other players, including former United Soccer League and MLS fan favorite, Emmanuel Ledesma.

The possibility of signing Asad was never expressly ruled out.
