Who is favored to win NFL MVP in 2023? Here's a look at the full odds entering Week 9 originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
The NFL is stocked with stars -- but only one can win MVP each year.
Even though the battle for MVP generally heats up as the weather gets colder, it's never too soon to start looking at the favorites. And with eight weeks complete in the 2023 NFL season, now is the perfect time.
Can Patrick Mahomes go back-to-back? Will Jalen Hurts keep things rolling all season? Or will a surprise contender emerge in the second half of the season?
Here's a full breakdown of the NFL MVP odds after Week 8:
What are the betting odds to win NFL MVP in 2023?
Mahomes entered the season favored to win his third MVP in six years. The reigning regular season and Super Bowl MVP dominated in 2022, leading the NFL in passing yards (5,250), passing touchdowns (41) and QBR (77.6). He's been productive through eight games this season, and even an uninspiring Week 8 loss (24 for 38, 240 yards, two interceptions) didn't bump him from the top of the MVP favorites.
Mahomes' closest competition for MVP so far is the quarterback he defeated in last season's Super Bowl -- Hurts. While the Eagles quarterback has been turnover-prone (eight interceptions, two fumbles), he has performed in the big moments. Hurts has 19 total touchdowns (13 passing, six rushing) and 2,140 passing yards, with the Eagles improving to 7-1 after a divisional win over the Washington Commanders in Week 8.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is also in the hunt for MVP. The fourth-year signal caller started the season at +2000 to win MVP, but he's exceeded expectations through eight games. He has 2,416 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions to go along with a 6-2 record. His MVP moment might have come in Week 3, when his team nearly set the single-game scoring record.
Several other star quarterbacks -- including Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Trevor Lawrence -- remain in the mix after productive starts.
