FAU moves up a spot in AP poll after extending winning streak

The Owls moved up one spot in this week’s AP poll after they extended their winning streak to four games.

FAU (15-4, 5-1 American Athletic Conference) picked up a pair of victories last week and was rewarded by poll voters, moving up to No. 22 in the poll.

The Owls, who have been ranked all season after reaching the Final Four last year, picked up a home win over Wichita State — with Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler and Florida Panthers standout Aleksander Barkov in the building — before going on the road and taking down UTSA in overtime.

Junior guard Johnell Davis helped lead FAU to its two wins this week, scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and six assists against Wichita State and notching 34 points with seven rebounds and three assists against UTSA. He also hit three crucial free throws to help send the game against the Roadrunners to overtime.

“I was just trying to stay calm,” Davis told the Associated Press. “Don’t worry about nothing. There was nothing going through my mind. Just taking a deep breath. Just finding the spot I usually shoot at the free throw line and all through my mind to go in.”

FAU goes back to Texas to face Rice at 8 p.m. on Wednesday before hosting North Texas at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
