FAMU basketball swept in Monday's SWAC doubleheader at Alcorn State

LORMAN, MISSISSIPPI ―The Florida A&M women's basketball team fell short in a 64-49 loss to the Alcorn State Braves on the road Monday.

The Rattlers (7-17, 6-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Ahriahna Grizzle, who had 17 points and three steals. Peryonna Sylvester tacked on 10 points from the bench and Jaliya Sharp added eight points.

The FAMU defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 14 Alcorn State turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Grizzle's three steals led the way individually for the Rattlers.

FAMU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rattlers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 34-18 halftime deficit.

FAMU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Rattlers faced a 50-31 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. FAMU played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 13 points in the paint.

Alcorn State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-42 advantage before FAMU went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-49 with 22 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. FAMU got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 18 total points.

FAMU men’s basketball dropped its sixth straight in a 79-68 loss at Alcorn State.

Forward Shannon Grant led the Rattlers (4-20, 2-11 SWAC) with 15 points and seven rebounds.

FAMU will host at Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday inside the Al Lawson Center.

Women will tipoff at 2 p.m. Men will follow at 4.
