FAMU baseball's Ty Jackson records four hits in SWAC second round win over Grambling State

ATLANTA Ty Jackson racked up four hits to help power the Florida A&M Rattlers past the Grambling Tigers 17-7 on Thursday.

Carson Kelly (8-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for FAMU (29-25). The left-hander went five innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

In addition to his four hits, Jackson had a double, two walks and four RBI to lead the Rattlers. Broedy Poppell compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run, two walks and three RBI. Adam Haidermota also contributed for FAMU, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding two walks and two RBI.

The Rattlers scored in six different innings on the way to victory. FAMU broke a 0-0 tie and took the lead for good at 1-0 in the second inning The big hits for the Rattlers in the inning were a three-run home run off the bat of Poppell and a two-run single from Haidermota.

FAMU basketball added their first student-athlete under new head coach Patrick Crarey in guard Milton Matthews from St. Thomas University (FL).

"Milton is one of the best shooters in college basketball," said Crarey. "He led the NAIA in threes made per game two years in a row, and this year, he led in total threes while shooting 40% both years. He's an exceptional teammate, and I'm elated that he decided to join me at FAMU."

Matthews joined FAMU after spending the last two seasons with Crarey at St. Thomas, where he led the team in scoring and was named First Team All-SUN both seasons. During the 2023-24 season, Matthews averaged 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Matthews also set a new program single-game scoring and three-point record when he scored 45 points and made 11 threes versus Penn State Greater Allegheny. Matthews scored 20+ points in 11 games and made three or more threes in 22 games. During the 2022-23 season, Matthews averaged 18.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. Matthews scored 20+ points in nine games and made three or more threes in 17 games. Matthews is an elite three-point shooter, as he made 100+ threes in both seasons while shooting 40% in both seasons.

FAMU track's trio concludes season at NCAA East Preliminaries

LEXINGTON, KYFAMU had a pretty full schedule on day two of the NCAA East Preliminaries (May 23). Rori Lowe and Nya Blocker competed in the 100 meters, Katelynn Smith took on the 400 hurdles, and Blocker returned to the track to race in the 200 meters.

With the "Top 24" advancing to the quarterfinals, Smith finished milliseconds short of qualifying, placing 25th in 58.19. She secured her spot in the regional meet at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships, where she achieved a personal record and won a gold medal with a time of 57.59. Prior to the NCAAs, Smith consistently finished "Top 3" in every 400H race this outdoor season.

Lowe and Blocker finished back-to-back in the 100-meter prelim, 36th (11.54) and 37th (11.55), respectively. The performance matched a college best for the former.

Blocker was the lone Rattler to qualify for two events at the NCAAs. Shortly after competing in the 100, she clocked in at 23.51 in the 200 to place 34th overall. She earned her NCAA East qualification just days before the deadline by achieving personal bests in the 100-meter (11.40) and 200-meter (23.17) events at the PURE Athletics Sprint Elite Meet. The Rattler freshman also took home a silver medal in the 100 meters at the SWAC Championships. Lowe received a bronze medal in the event.

In total, FAMU sent five athletes to Kentucky: Smith, Blocker, Lowe, Joseph DeRosier, and Breanna Brown-Marshall, who is next up to compete. She will need to finish "Top 12" in the high jump on Saturday to punch her ticket to Oregon. The event begins at 2 p.m. Live stats can be found here.
