Fall signing day in Brevard County high school sports

The fall period for college sports signings by high school seniors opened Wednesday, and those in Brevard County included several headed for major programs.

Melbourne High pitcher Jasmine Francik will play for Florida State, one of five Bulldogs to sign in an evening ceremony at the school. Francik, the three-time FLORIDA TODAY Softball Player of the Year, recorded eight no-hitters last season while striking out 411 batters in 180 innings and producing an ERA of 0.19.

Her teammates Rylie Mecchella (Kaiser), Alicia Thompson (Western Florida) and Hailey Turner (Florida Southwestern) joined in a Mel High media center packed with parents and supporters. Lacrosse player Carys Steckler made it five Bulldogs, and she signed with St. Thomas.

The day started with a morning ceremony at Holy Trinity, where three girls signed, including two from the track and field team. Maya Collins, a state medal-winning sprinter and All-Space Coast selection, signed with Notre Dame. Alinah Sarratt, a hurdler who earned All-Space Coast recognition in both basketball and track, signed with Kansas.

Palm Bay matched that number with three signing after lunch, including post player Kiara Williams (13.1 points and 8.0 rebounds last season) heading to Pitt. She was part of a Class 5A state runner-up team with the Pirates and played on a Florida Air championship team prior to switching schools. Natalie Allen, another player with All-Space Coast mention, signed with Palm Beach Atlantic basketball, and Kiara Clarke with Arkansas State soccer.

Viera's Lauren Bell signed at an afternoon ceremony in the school's auditorium. She will play basketball for Daytona Beach State College and is another player who has been included in All-Space Coast basketball recognition.

On Thursday, Satellite right-handed pitcher Jonathan Wolaver signed with USF. He went 5-2 last season and struck out 63 batters in 43 innings.
