Fab Freshman & Savvy Veterans: The top performers in high school sports last week

A number of freshmen made a big impact last week, while their more experienced counterparts continued to excel with clutch overtime goals and impressive shutouts.

Check out the Top Performances from last week in soccer, field hockey, cross country, and volleyball and be sure to vote in the latest Boys Athlete of the Week Poll, and Girls Athlete of the Week poll.

Girls Soccer

Ashley Brown, Dock Mennonite: The freshman scored two goals and had an assist in the Pioneers’ 7-1 win over Calvary Christian.

Alayna Sanni, Germantown Academy: The junior tallied two goals to lead the Patriots to a 3-2 victory against Shipley School.

Ella Koschineg, Gwynedd Mercy: It was another huge week for the Monarchs’ star midfielder, who scored two goals against Haverford School, and two goals and one assist against Villa Joseph Marie. Both games resulted in 3-3 ties. Koschineg has eight goals and three assists in six games this season.

Regan Kelso, Archbishop Wood: Kelso came through with the game-winning goal in a 1-0 defensive battle against Catholic League opponent Cardinal O’Hara.

Hannah Beckett, Souderton: Beckett recorded two goals in the second half to secure the Big Red's first win of the season, a 3-0 victory against Mount St. Joseph.

Emma Levin, Hatboro-Horsham: Levin posted a hat trick in the Hatters’ 7-0 win against New Hope-Solebury.

Lia Jablonowski and Bailey Kasner, William Tennent: The two freshmen came up big for the unbeaten Panthers (7-0) against Wissahickon, scoring two goals apiece in the 5-1 win.

Braelyn Harrington, Abington: The junior came off the bench and scored to give the Ghosts the lead in a 3-1 win over Upper Moreland.

Brooke Hall, CB South: Hall had a goal and an assist in the second half to give the Titans a 2-1 win over Neshaminy.

Mia Cairone, Council Rock North: Cairone scored all three goals for CR North in a 3-0 win against Pennsbury.

Maddy Murphy, North Penn: Murphy tallied both goals to lead the Knights to a 2-1 win over Pennsbury.

Reegan Moran, Central Bucks West: Moran registered the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Bucks a 1-0 win over Council Rock North.

Cam Nocito, CB West: The Bucks’ goalie preserved a shutout through overtime in a 1-0 win against Council Rock North.

Devon Bell, Bensalem: Bell scored the game-winner in the second half to give Bensalem a come-from-behind victory, 2-1, over Souderton.

 Bri Garyah, Neshaminy: Garyah tallied a hat trick for Neshaminy — one in the first half, one in the second half, and one in overtime — in a 3-2 OT win against Bensalem.

Mia Forney, CB East: The freshman scored three goals to help the Patriots to a 5-0 victory against North Penn.

Boys Soccer

Victor Colom, Dock Mennonite: Colom had quite the week for the Pioneers. Colom had a hand in all six goals in Monday’s 6-1 win against Collegium Charter, scoring four and assisting on the other two. Against Phil-Mont Christian, Colom scored four more goals.

Sam Tchoumandrine, George School: The junior forward scored both goals for the Cougars in a 2-0 win over  New Foundations.

Nate Lacham, Dock Mennonite: The junior midfielder had an exceptional outing playing center back for the Pioneers’ against Phil-Mont Christian. Lacham led a young backfield that produced a shutout in the 12-0 win.

Efram Krasovic, George School: The senior goalie recorded a shutout, the first of his varsity career, in the Cougars’ 2-0 win against New Foundations.

Matt Cancelliere, Holy Ghost Prep: The freshman scored the first-ever goal in Holy Ghost’s brand-new Duaime Athletic Complex in Friday’s game against Lansdale Catholic. The goal also turned out to be the game-winner as the Firebirds won 1-0 on their new home field.

Colin Moyer, Faith Christian: The senior had a huge week for a Lions’ squad with state championship aspirations. Moyer scored four goals against Pennridge and three goals vs. Delco Christian, both of which were wins for the 6-0 Lions.

Mark Mazzoni, La Salle: The junior scored two goals against Devon Prep and two more against Cardinal O’Hara, leading the Explorers to wins in both games.

Ryan Kalup, La Salle: The Explorers’ goalie notched two consecutive shutouts in wins against Devon Prep and Cardinal O’Hara.

Logan Savage, Archbishop Wood: The senior scored two goals to lead the Vikings to a 3-1 win over Archbishop Carroll.

Tyler Schmitt, Conwell-Egan:  Schmitt scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Eagles a huge 2-1 win over powerhouse La Salle at the PCL Play Day. Schmitt also had an assist on the first goal.

Dylan Kopenits, Conwell-Egan: Against a tough La Salle team, Kopenits scored the Eagles’ first goal of the game and assisted on the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime victory.

Evan Zawodniak, Council Rock South: The Golden Hawks’ goalie posted a clean sheet in net against a tough Pennsbury squad in a 2-0 SOL Patriot League win.

Logan Gisondi and Anthony Pumilia, Hatboro-Horsham: The teammates posted identical stat lines, both scoring two goals and assisting on one more, to snap a three-game losing streak for the Hatters in a 4-2 win over New Hope-Solebury.

Cam Taylor, Souderton: Taylor’s first varsity goal was a big one. He scored the lone goal of the game to give Souderton a 1-0 win against Bensalem.

Cal Hopkins, Council Rock North: CR North’s goalie made several acrobatic saves in net to secure the shutout and 2-0 win against CB West. He posted another clean sheet in a 3-0 victory over Pennsbury.

Pat Fannon, Pennridge: The senior scored three goals to lead the Rams to their first win of the season over Harry S. Truman.

Josh Garcia, Bensalem: Garcia anchored the back line for an Owls’ defense that posted a shutout in a 1-0 win over Neshaminy.

Nick Bonargo, Central Bucks East: After an hour-long lightning delay with the game tied, Bonargo scored the go-ahead goal to give the Patriots a 3-2 win over North Penn.

Field Hockey

Paige Hinnerschiltz, Dock Mennonite: Her goal in overtime gave the Pioneers’ the win against BAL rival Faith Christian. Hinnershiltz also had an assist in the 4-3 win.

Erin Miles, Dock Mennonite: Miles scored three goals and assisted on one in the Pioneers’ win over Sacred Heart Academy.

Hadley Harbert, Germantown Academy: It was a long wait between the Patriots’ first game on Aug. 31, and their second on Sept. 14. Harbert, unfazed by the layoff, scored two goals to lead the Patriots to a 5-1 win over Academy of the New Church. The victory was the first for new head coach Jill Posen.

CiCi Turco, Villa Joseph Marie: The junior tallied the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Jems a big victory, 1-0, against Dock Mennonite.

Megan Klein, Bensalem: Klein scored the lone goal of the game to give the Owls a 1-0 win over Norristown. Earlier in the week, she had a goal and an assist in the Owls’ victory over Truman, which was Bensalem’s first win of the season.

Kasey Rieger, Neshaminy: The junior University of Delaware commit registered two goals, and scored her 100th career point while leading Neshaminy to a 2-1 win over CR South.

Cassidy Landis, Quakertown: The freshman delivered a hat trick to power the Panthers to a 4-0 win over Abington.

Aida Ierubino, CB West: The sophomore scored three goals and assisted on two more in the Bucks 8-2 victory over Souderton.

Kiley Moister, North Penn: The Knights’ goalie recorded seven saves and secured the shutout in a 4-0 win against CB East.

Tessa Walls, CB South: Walls scored the golden goal in overtime to give the Titans a 2-1 win over Pennridge.

Ava Cozza, New Hope-Solebury: Cozza recorded four goals in the Lions’ 9-0 win against Tennent.

Paige Longacre, Quakertown: The freshman scored two goals in the first quarter to put the Panthers on the path to a 6-0 win against Hatboro-Horsham.

Morgan Volans, CB East: Volans tallied the game-winning goal in the third quarter of the Patriots 1-0 victory over Souderton.

Maddy Mela, CR North: Mela scored twice in the second half to power CR North to a 3-1 comeback win against Neshaminy. It was the Indians’ first victory over Neshaminy in their last 19 games.

Cross Country

Matthew Gorman, Conwell-Egan: The senior won the boys 5k at the Cairn University Invitational with a time of 17:05:00.

Shana Kearney, Bensalem: Kearney was the winner of the girls 5k race at the Cairn University Invitational with a time of 19:43.20, crossing the line nearly a full minute before the next finisher.

Andreas Quattrocchi, Bristol: The junior won the boys 5k race with a time of 18:40.20 at the first Bicentennial Athletic League meet of the season.

Gwen Hamilton, Archbishop Wood: The sophomore took first place in the girls 5k race with a time of 21:18.08  at the first Philadelphia Catholic League meet of the season.

Volleyball

Caroline Smith, Germantown Academy: Smith tallied eight kills and three blocks in the Patriots’ 3-0 sweep of Perkiomen School, and against Archbishop Ryan she had a team-high 12 kills in the 3-0 win.

Brooke Forester, Conwell-Egan: The junior tallied 13 digs, 11 kills and four blocks to lead the Eagles to a big win, 3-2, over Archbishop Ryan in their first Catholic League matchup of the season. Forester reached a major milestone in the game, recording her 300th career kill.

Faith Szumigala, Pennsbury: The senior setter dished out 29 assists, along with 10 digs, six aces and two kills, in the Falcons’ sweep of Bensalem.

Ashlyn Dinan, Council Rock South: Dinan distributed 17 assists, and had nine digs and one ace, to help lead the Golden Hawks to a 3-2 win over Hatboro-Horsham. She had 19 assists in CR South’s 3-2 victory over Haverford.

Sara McCafferty, Council Rock North: The junior dished out 29 assists to her teammates to help secure a 3-0 win against Neshaminy.
