Ex-Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas died from ‘complications of seizure disorder’
Seven months after Demaryius Thomas was found dead in his Roswell, Georgia home at age 33, the cause of death for the former NFL wide receiver has been revealed.
Thomas died from “complications of seizure disorder,” according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner (via The Denver Post). Thomas’ family previously said in December that they believed he died of a seizure.
Thomas was posthumously diagnosed with stage 2 of CTE last month (stage 4 is the highest stage), but “it is unknown whether Mr. Thomas’ seizure disorder is a result of natural causes or a sequela of head impacts incurred during his career as a professional football player,” the medical examiner wrote in her report.
In addition to his head trauma related to football, Thomas was also in a serious car crash in 2019, although it’s unclear if that accident contributed to his seizure disorder.
Thomas won Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos following the 2015 season. The five-time Pro Bowler and two-time Pro Bowl hauled in 724 receptions for 9,763 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns during his 10-year career in the NFL.
