Quick Hits

  • Justin Herbert finished with 136 passing yards, the lowest total in his career. Herbert was never going to be spectacular facing a tough Jets defense that has dominated some of the league’s top quarterbacks. New York did a good job pressuring him with three or four rushers and taking away his receivers. Herbert was sacked five times.

  • Herbert had a standout moment, however, when he orchestrated a drive that killed a little over eight minutes off the clock near the end of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter. On that drive, he converted four third-down attempts.

  • The Chargers did not run the ball much, but they still got decent results. Austin Ekeler rushed for 47 yards, with a long of 20, which set him up for his first touchdown. Joshua Kelley had 18 yards on three carries.

  • Despite the passing offense being at its lowest, Keenan Allen still shined, turning nine targets into eight catches for 77 yards, including a flashy one-handed grab that went for 23 yards and put him over the 10,000-yard mark.

  • The Jets’ offense wasn’t anything to write home about coming into this game, but the Chargers took advantage of that and played a physical brand of football through all four quarters. Up front, Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu obliterated New York’s offensive line, combining for 6.5 sacks.

  • The run defense continues to be good, as they held Breece Hall to 3.1 yards per carry.

  • Alohi Gilman is a difference-maker on the field. Gilman laid the wood on the Jets’ first drive, forced a fumble a few plays later and recovered a fumble that he nearly returned for a touchdown towards the end of the game.

  • Derius Davis set the tone with his 87-yard punt return touchdown. Some thought it was a bit rich when they drafted Davis in the fourth round, but the pick has been rewarding and refreshing to know the Chargers have a legitimate return specialist.

  • The same can be said about the kicker position, as Cameron Dickers has been nails this season. Dicker made both field goals, including a 55-yarder and all three extra points.
