Everything Aggies football head coach Jimbo Fisher had to say at the Houston A&M Club

With a handful of months remaining between meaningful college football, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher took some time to speak at the Houston A&M Club on Monday night.

The club is the largest association of former Texas A&M students and has been since it was chartered by the Association of Former Students in 1923. The group strives to raise money to fund Scholarships for Aggies from the Houston area currently enrolled at Texas A&M, to raise financial support for the University, and to provide a forum to foster the Aggie Spirit.

With a guest speaker such as Jimbo taking the stage, the Aggies head coach raved about the culture at A&M, while of course shedding light on the football team’s expectations heading into a significant 2023 season.

Here is everything Jimbo Fisher had to say Monday night:

On the Aggies culture and the impact it carries into recruiting

“The culture of A&M always amazes me, and you’re seeing that in recruiting… The Aggie ring on their fingers means a lot to them, and they know it will open up a lot of doors.”

Getting back to the basics has been a key theme throughout spring football

“When things aren’t going your way in the game and things aren’t happening, go back to your fundamentals. Go back to your basics.”

“When you get back to it, fundamentals still win and lose games.”

Understanding each player's drive and passion for the game was essential throughout spring

“You’ve got to know your ‘whys’ in this world.”

“The ‘why’ for our players this spring was ‘Why are you playing the game?’ Do you love the game? You’ve got to love the game.”

Jimbo believes this has been the best spring the team has had in a while, with the hope that it carries into the season

“We’ve had as good of a spring as we’ve had in a long time. Now, hopefully, that translates into the spring and then translates into the fall.”

Jimbo praised A&M's new coaches since joining the stuff, including new OC Bobby Petrino

“Bobby (Petrino) has done a great job with the offense. He understands what we do and what he does. … It has been very cohesive.”

Jimbo shed some light on how many scholarships they'll have on the roster for the fall

“We’ll be probably between 80-83 (players on) scholarships (this fall).”

The Aggies coach gave some personal perspective on the impact the transfer portal has had on all parties

“We retained about 88 percent of our production from last year.”

“The portal for some guys is good, and the portal for some guys is tough… We’ve done a good job.”

Jimbo sees great things when it comes to the offensive line this year, with one name in particular drawing praise

“Our depth on the offensive line is probably as deep as it has been since we’ve been here.”

“Remember the name Mark Nabou. He will be a guy you see playing a lot of football this year.”

Jimbo gave high praise to OL Layden Robinson, who has had his best spring by far

“He had his best spring by far. I hope your kids turn out just like him. He’s an outstanding human being.”

Fisher says that OL Colton Thomasson has lost 80 pounds since the Aggies recruited him out of high school

“I need to get on his diet and get his discipline. He’s going to be a really good player.”

Fisher applauds Ainias Smith's leadership after returning to College Station

“He’s a great leader on our team. That’s one of the things I’m really excited about, our leadership.”

“It’s amazing the kind of football player he is, the things he can do.”

Fisher noted that wide receiver Noah Thomas will be starting after an MVP level performance in the spring

“He was the MVP of the spring. He will be playing. He will be starting. He’s the real deal.”

“I really have my eye on him.”

Fisher believes running back Le'Veon Moss will be a high draft pick as a dual-threat tailback

“Le’Veon (Moss) is going to be a high draft pick. … He can do everything. He’s a physical back, and he’s a fast back.”

Jimbo noted that CB Deuce Harmon had surgery to correct turf toe, but he'll be back soon enough

“Deuce will be back. He can really run. He’s a good player.”

Jimbo notes that the Aggies will remain aggressive in the portal, as the team isn't finished adding just yet

“We’re still adding. We’re going to add more guys before this whole thing is over.”

Jimbo believes this team has high potential next season, but only if they build winning habits

“We have a chance to be a really good football team, but so does everybody else. We do have our warts, but so does everybody else. It’s about who can get rid of their warts.

When pressure comes in games, whatever it is, your habits are coming to the surface.

You have to create winning habits and championship habits.”

Jimbo on how he has reacted to the offensive changes

“Good. It has been easy.

Our philosophies are very similar, and we’ve all known each other for a long time.”
