Everton v Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Trossard strike secures well-earned Arsenal win

Arsenal hope to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season as they travel to struggling Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s are riding high after clinching a late victory over Manchester United in their last match before the international break to make it 10 points from their opening four matches and they’ll look to take that momentum into today’s encounter. Manchester, Liverpool and Tottenham are setting the early pace at the top of the table so it would be a big error if Arsenal were to drop points at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche’s side, meanwhile, picked up their opening points of the season with a 2-2 away draw against Sheffield United. The Toffees won this fixture 1-0 last season in Dyche’s first game in charge and will be hoping for a repeat performance to kickstart their league campaign.

Arsenal end Goodison curse thanks to Mikel Arteta’s bargain buy

19:13 , Luke Baker

One of the stranger jinxes in English football may be over. Arsenal had lost on their previous three trips to Goodison Park, twice to horribly out-of-form Everton teams. Maybe logic intervened on Mikel Arteta’s fourth visit back to his former club. Or perhaps Leandro Trossard did, the substitute’s wonderfully precise finish giving Arsenal a fourth victory in five league games this season.

There was a sense Arsenal avenged February’s 1-0 defeat in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of Everton, not merely reversing the scoreline but showing their skill to take the same method – a set-piece – to find a very different way of deciding a match. Not a thumping James Tarkowski header from a corner, but a well-worked routine that culminated in Martin Odegaard slipping in Bukayo Saka, whose cutback brought a deft finish from Trossard, angled in off the far post.

If some of Arteta’s recruitment in 2023 has a contentious feel, Trossard is the sort of signing who can simply be celebrated: a £20m bargain, a creative force last season who has two goals already in this, a player whose versatility makes him an ideal substitute but who has the quality to be decisive.

Arsenal end Goodison curse thanks to Mikel Arteta’s bargain buy

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Sport

19:08 , Ben Fleming

“The game didn’t deserve a win. We defended resolutely but we never got to grips with the ball. The defensive side worked really hard but the attacking side we were never really near to laying a glove and making a difference.

“They pressed well and we were unsure whether to go short or long. You have to get the first pass away on turnover. If you don’t get it away then the team can’t open up on the counter.

“The details on the set piece - a good finish from them but really poor on the details from us.

“The performance levels have been there but the details kill you in football. I said clearly after last season there was a massive amount of work to do. There still is, it can’t be all changed in one window.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports

18:59 , Ben Fleming

“We talked about it, this is the challenge. For six years we haven’t won here and there are a few reasons for it. I think we played an incredible game, we kept them quiet and created many many chances, The first [disallowed] goal should have been allowed. We dominated the game and we are extremely happy to go away with a win and a clean sheet.

“I think we took the game into the areas we wanted for long and we were really solid. We gave very very little away. They haven’t created a single chance. It’s about intelligence but also about the fight.”

On the injury picked up by Martinelli: “He felt something in his hamstring so he will need to be assessed.”

Everton defender Ashley Young speaking to Sky Sports

18:53 , Ben Fleming

“I think at times we were resilient, we had to defend as a team. Especially in the first half, we did that really well and nullified them. We’ve been done by a set-piece which is disappointing. Not to come away from the game with at least a point is obviously disappointing.

“There were a couple of times they got in behind but we kept out our shape and we nullified them to only a few chances. We knew they would have a lot of the ball but when we got it back we gave it away too cheap. At times it was tough but we stayed in the game and to concede in that way was disappointing.

“We’re a few games in, we’re disappointed not to get three points in any of the games, especially when we’ve created chances. I have every faith in the manager, the players and the dressing round to turn things around.”

Man of the match Leandro Trossard speaking to Sky Sports

18:44 , Ben Fleming

“It’s always nice to help your team, especially with a winning goal. I called Bukayo and he saw me with a perfect lay-off. It went in perfectly and I’m very happy. I’ve been practicing all my life on both feet and you can see it helps you. It’s so helpful if you’re good on both feet, you can go both ways and score off either.”

On Arsenal’s record at Goodison Park: “We knew and we wanted to win the game. It’s always a hard game, they give you a hard time but I think we defended the box well, got a couple of chances and took one of those chances.”

On his minutes in the team this season: “You know the competition in the team - we have so many good players. I’m happy at the moment and happy I could contribute with a goal.”

FULL-TIME: Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:38 , Ben Fleming

For Arsenal, meanwhile, it’s a dogged, hard-fought win on a ground that they have often fallen short. The goal eventually came from Leandro Trossard, who replaced the injured Gabriel Martinelli in the first half.

Let’s take a look at the strike:

FULL-TIME: Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:36 , Ben Fleming

Everton’s barren run in front of goal at home continues. Just one shot on target today and their third 1-0 defeat at home in a row to start the season. Plenty of work for Sean Dyche to do but his Everton side look like they will be firmly in a relegation dogfight again this season.

FULL-TIME: Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:26 , Ben Fleming

Boos ring around Goodison Park as the full-time whistle goes. Leandro Trossard’s second-half strike is the difference as Arsenal secure a well-deserved 1-0 victory against Everton.

It’s their first victory on this ground since 2017 but another important three points to keep pace with Manchester City even at this very early stage.

For Everton, the search for a Premier League win this season goes on. Just one point from their first five games makes for fairly grim reading.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

90+2 mins: Jesus does a good job of drawing a foul from the Everton defence deep in the home side’s half. Arteta’s side just looking to run down the clock at this point.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:16 , Ben Fleming

84 mins: Everton yet to register a shot on target in the second half as Arsenal clear away a long ball into the box from a free-kick. Running out of time for Sean Dyche’s side as they look to avoid another defeat to start this season.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:12 , Ben Fleming

80 mins: A double change for Arsenal as we approach the final ten minutes. Zinchenko is replaced by Tomiyasu in defence, while Havertz comes on for Vieira in midfield.

A change, too, for Everton as Garner comes on for Doucoure.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:10 , Ben Fleming

77 mins: CHANCE! That really should be 2-0 to Arsenal. The home side commit plenty of players forward and Odegaard finds himself through on goal. It’s a great save from Pickford to deny the Arsenal captain as Mykolenko retreats to make a crucial block on Vieira’s effort as he looks to fire home the rebound.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:08 , Ben Fleming

76 mins: Jesus tries to wriggle his way through on goal but finds himself crowded out by the retreating Mykolenko. Everton drive up the pitch as the ball falls to Gueye on the edge of the box but the midfielder’s effort is sliced wide of the post.

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

Everton 0-1 Arsenal

18:05 , Ben Fleming

72 mins: Everton need to change their gameplan now to try and find an equaliser as they instantly throw more men forward. Mykolenko’s effort is blocked behind by Saliba as the eventual corner is cleared away.

GOAL! Everton 0-1 Arsenal (Trossard, ‘69)

18:01 , Ben Fleming

At long last, Arsenal break the deadlock as the substitute Trossard lashes home! with a wonderful finish. Saka pulls the ball back to the Belgian and it’s a sweetly-hit first-time effort which cannons off the post and into the back of the Everton net.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

18:00 , Ben Fleming

68 mins: The seventh corner of the game for Arsenal, but a similar result as Calvert-Lewin heads away the ball.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:59 , Ben Fleming

67 mins: Calvert-Lewin is involved immediately as he makes a nuisance of himself from a long throw-in. The ball eventually drops to Danjuma but his well-hit effort flies wide of the right post from the edge of the box.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:58 , Ben Fleming

66 mins: A change each for both sides in the forward line. Jesus replaces Nkeitah for Arsenal, while Everton bring on the masked Calvert-Lewin for Beto.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:57 , Ben Fleming

64 mins: Beto wins another free-kick for Everton which Young delivers. It’s from a narrow position and aiming for Tarkowski, but the ball is cleared away by Saliba and there’s now a stoppage after Gabriel was caught by the Everton centre-back’s elbow.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:52 , Ben Fleming

59 mins: From the corner, the ball falls to Zinchenko and his strike is deflected behind for another corner off Tarkowski.

There are appeals for a penalty from the Arsenal players but nothing given by VAR.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:51 , Ben Fleming

58 mins: Nketiah is the latest Arsenal player to pick up the ball inside the box, but he’s shepherded well away from the goal by Tarkowski who blocks the eventual shot out for a corner.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:49 , Ben Fleming

56 mins: Trossard picks up the ball on the left-hand side and bursts into the box. His low cross doesn’t find the feet of an Arsenal player and it’s partly cleared away as far as Vieira. The midfielder tries to strike it first time but it’s well blocked by the Everton defence.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:46 , Ben Fleming

54 mins: Pickford is yelling at his defence once again as a miscommuncation also costs the host side. There have been a few hairy moments between Tarkowski and his keeper but they remain level in this game ten minutes into the second half.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:44 , Ben Fleming

52 mins: Trossard finds a pocket of space on the left as he shifts the ball onto his right to cross. The ball is aimed at Nketiah but the Everton defence do well to clear the ball away.

HALF-TIME: Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:28 , Ben Fleming

Here’s the big moment of the first half as Gabriel Martinelli saw his effort ruled out.

Gary Neville certainly wasn’t convinced but it looks like the right decision was just about reached. What do you think?

HALF-TIME: Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:22 , Ben Fleming

Far from a classic so far at Goodison Park but Everton won’t mind as they head into the break still level at 0-0 against Arsenal.

Arteta’s side thought they had gone ahead when Martinelli found the back of the net after 19 minutes, but his goal was chalked off by VAR due to an offside in the build-up.

The Brazilian made way shortly after with an injury and, since there, it’s been a fairly drab affair with few big chances for either side.

Let’s hope for something better after the break...

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:18 , Ben Fleming

45+2 mins: The first yellow card of the game is shown to Young after a poor challenge on Trossard.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:18 , Ben Fleming

45+1 mins: Into the first of four minutes of added time as Everton make their way up the pitch. A ball in from the left is controlled by McNeil, but his effort is blocked by the Arsenal defence inside the box.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:15 , Ben Fleming

43 mins: Another nice spell of possession and territory for the away side as we approach the break. Some neat combinations and quick, intricate moves put together but nothing in the way of meaningful attempts on goal, thus far, for Arteta’s side.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:12 , Ben Fleming

40 mins: Some nice combination play from Odegaard and White on the right edge of the penalty box. The Arsenal right-back eventually creates an avenue for a long-range effort, but it’s straight into the palms of Pickford in the Everton goal.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:08 , Ben Fleming

37 mins: And there’s another stoppage right after as Mykolenko is late into a challenge on Saka. There appeared to be the briefest of VAR checks for a possible red card but nothing doing and we are back under way.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:07 , Ben Fleming

35 mins: A slight stoppage as Vieira is caught by the arm of Beto. The Arsenal midfielder is back on his feet and okay to continue.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:03 , Ben Fleming

31 mins: Doucoure makes a surging run up the pitch as Everton begin to get going in this game. The midfielder jinks inside the box but goes down far too easily under no real challenge from the Arsenal defence.

In the end, Gueye tries his luck from range but it’s a comfortable save for Raya down to his right.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

17:01 , Ben Fleming

30 mins: Ashley Young gets forward from right-back as he floats a ball into the box. Raya does well, though, as he comes off the line to claim the ball in the air.

He’s not had much to do so far on his Arsenal league debut.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:59 , Ben Fleming

28 mins: Just 24 per cent possession for the hosts who have really struggled to make any inroads up the pitch. Not a single shot on goal either...

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:56 , Ben Fleming

24 mins: From bad to worse for Martinelli. Having had a goal chalked off, the Brazilian is now substituted having picked up an injury just moments later.

Trossard comes on in his place.

DISALLOWED! Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:50 , Ben Fleming

21 mins: Martinelli has the ball in the back of the net and it won’t stand!

The Brazillian thought he had put Arsenal ahead with a lovely, curling finish into the far corner, but the Nketiah is deemed to be offside in the build-up and the goal is chalked off after a VAR check.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:49 , Ben Fleming

18 mins: White hangs a ball up to the far post but the onrushing Vieira is unable to control the bal l with an outstretched boot and Everton can clear.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:46 , Ben Fleming

14 mins: Not a lot to report as the clock ticks towards the 15-minute mark in this encounter. Raya has his first touches in an Arsenal shirt and it’s a nice long ball from the Spaniard - looking for Saka - but the forward can’t get past Mykolenko and the play breaks down.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:41 , Ben Fleming

10 mins: The corner is eventually taken and the loose ball is eventually recycled to Vieira inside the box. The Portuguese midfielder is starting his first league game of the season but snatches at the effort on this occasion and it sails over the bar.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:39 , Ben Fleming

8 mins: Everton doing a good job of quelling the early Arsenal pressure. Saka, though, is fed a nice ball down the right channel but Branthwaite is alert to the danger as he diverts the ball out for a corner.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:34 , Ben Fleming

3 mins: Arsenal win an early corner as they make a positive start to this encounter. Saka floats it in but it’s headed away powerfully by Tarkowski.

Kick-off! Everton 0-0 Arsenal

16:31 , Ben Fleming

1 min: Arsenal get us underway in Merseyside.

Kick-off moments away

16:28 , Ben Fleming

The players are out of the tunnel and onto the pitch, with kick-off right around the corner!

16:22 , Ben Fleming

Some pre-match stats with kick-off fast approaching:

  • Everton have won four of their last five home league games against Arsenal (D1), including each of the last three in a row. They last won four consecutively against the Gunners between March 1910 and March 1913.

  • Both of Everton’s Premier League home games this season have been 1-0 defeats. Only three times in their league history have they lost each of their first three at Goodison Park (1958-59, 2005-06 and 2008-09), while among those only in 2005-06 did they fail to score a single goal.

  • Since the start of last season, Arsenal have kept more away clean sheets than any other side in the Premier League (11). They’ve also won a joint league-high 13 games on the road, while only Manchester City (17) have conceded fewer goals than the Gunners (18, excluding promoted sides).

  • Sean Dyche has won just two of his 16 Premier League games against Arsenal (D3 L11), with his sides scoring just seven goals in these matches and never more than once. However, one of those wins was in his first match in charge of Everton in February last season.

Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports before the game

16:15 , Ben Fleming

On Raya replacing Ramsdale: “We wanted to be a squad which had two quality players in each position with different characteristics.

“To maximise that they have to play games and we have a lot of games coming up. Everyone will get a lot of game times in the next few weeks.”

The Arsenal boss not giving a lot away on the decision to drop the Englishman to the bench.

Gabriel Jesus ‘changed Arsenal’s world last season’, says Mikel Arteta

16:09 , Ben Fleming

Mikel Arteta lauded “tremendous” Gabriel Jesus who he claims “changed Arsenal’s world last season”.

Gunners boss Arteta could start the Brazil striker for the first time this term at Everton on Sunday after he recovered from a spate of injuries.

Jesus has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring last time out in the 3-1 victory over Manchester United on September 3.

But Arteta insists the former Manchester City forward’s game is about more than goals.

“He is a tremendous player,” said Arteta, whose side finished runners-up in the Premier League in 2022-23.

“A really important player for us. He changed our world last season. You could all see that. He is going to be a really important player for us.

“I think he brought a different energy, a different belief, a different threat, a different fear to opponents.”

Yesterday’s action

16:02 , Ben Fleming

Over at Old Trafford, there was another concering performance for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United as they slumped toa 3-1 defeat against the impressive Brighton.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro saw Roberto De Zerbi’s men move up to third.

The home fans greeted Ten Hag’s side with boos after the full-time whistle having suffered their third defeat in just five league games.

Yesterday’s action

15:55 , Ben Fleming

We have just over half an hour before kick-off at Goodison Park, so let’s take a quick look back at a couple of yesterday’s results.

In the early kick-off on Saturday, Liverpool came from behind to secure a late 3-1 victory against Wolves.

Andrew Robertson and Hugo Bueno’s own goal saw the Reds escape Molineux with a victory which looked unlikely at half-time.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s early opener gave Wolves the lead as the hosts dominated and only a woeful miss by Matheus Cunha stopped them going further ahead.

Liverpool were wretched in the first half but slowly improved, levelling through Cody Gakpo before breaking Wolves’ resistance with four minutes left for a third comeback win of the season.

Two changes for Everton as McNeil starts

15:45 , Ben Fleming

Sean Dyche also makes two changes to his side after their 2-2 draw against Sheffield United before the international break. Vitalii Mykolenko replaces Nathan Patterson at right-back, while Dwight McNeil comes in for his first league start of the season on the right of midfield with James Garner dropping to the bench.

Everton’s bench is as follows: Calvert-Lewin, Godfrey, Virginia, Garner, Patterson, Dobbin, Onyango, Chermiti.

Ramsdale and Havertz dropped by Arsenal

15:40 , Ben Fleming

So the big team news comes from Arsenal as both Aaron Ramsdale and Kai Havertz drop to the bench. Ramsdale was in action for England during the international break but finds himself on the bench for today’s match as summer signing David Raya makes his first Premier League start for the club.

Havertz, meanwhile, has endured a tough start to life at Arsenal since his summer move and is replaced by Fabio Vieira in central midfield who makes his first league start of the season.

Arsenal’s substitutes are: Nelson, Jesus, Smith Rowe, Havertz, Tomiyasu, Ramsdale, Jorginho, Kiwior, Trossard.

Starting lineups confirmed!

15:32 , Ben Fleming

And the confirmed starting XI’s are in:

Everton (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Mykolenko, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Young; McNeil, Gueye, Onana, Danjuma; Doucoure; Beto.

Arsenal (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Vieira; Martinelli, Nketiah, Saka.

Everton sale to American firm agreed

15:28 , Ben Fleming

Before we get team news, a reminder of some big news concerning Everton from a few days ago as Farhad Moshiri agreed a deal to sell Everton to American investment firm 777 Partners.

The British-Iranian businessman, who owns 94.1 per cent of the shares, will sell his entire stake to 777, who have also invested in Sevilla, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Vasco da Gama, Standard Liege, Red Star and Melbourne Victory.

It will bring an end to Moshiri’s disastrous reign in charge at Goodison Park in which Everton have spent around £700m on players in seven years, only just avoided relegation in the last two seasons and are winless in the Premier League now.

Moshiri, who has seemed short of funds since his long-time business partner, Alisher Usmanov, was sanctioned after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, had been searching for investors to help fund Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which will cost £500m and is due to open in 2024.

Mikel Arteta keen to end Arsenal’s Everton hoodoo despite ’emotional connection’

15:22 , Ben Fleming

Mikel Arteta admitted he has an emotional connection with Everton and expects his former side to put up a battle when Arsenal travel to Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday.

“I’m really excited about it, the last six years we have not won there so we are going to have to earn it,” Arteta said. We know we are going to have to be at our best to beat them there and that’s something we haven’t managed to do so that’s where we are going to start.

“It is a big emotional connection I have to that football club with many years I spent there, the incredible memories that I have so I’m always grateful. It’s a big part of my playing career and as a coach I have to play against them and we have to beat them.

“We’ve been here and we’ve been to grounds before where we haven’t won before and we’ve done it so it’s about understanding the importance and knowing what we lacked in those games and putting it right. Sometimes you cannot avoid a battle (with Everton), the style of play they have is very clear and they’re very good at that.

“We have a different one and it’s about trying to impose your way of playing and the tactic is just to make sure your opponent’s strengths are hiding and that ours are coming out every single time to fulfill the potential of your players, and that’s what I think both managers and players will try to do.”

Early team news

Arsenal, by contrast, have few injury concerns. Summer-signing Jurien Timber is set for a long spell on the sidelines, while Sunday’s game may well come too soon for Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny who are recovering from groin and knee injuries respectively.

Early team news

15:12 , Ben Fleming

Everton continue to grapple with a host of injuries to key players with Dele Ali and Seamus Coleman long-term absentees. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jarrad Branthwaite, Jack Harrison and Andre Gomes could all make a return to the starting XI following their various injuries, while James Tarkowski is expected to recover from a facial injury sustained against Sheffield United.

Sean Dyche’s side, meanwhile, picked up their opening points of the season prior to the international break with a 2-2 away draw against Sheffield United.
