Erik Swanson, Mariemont HS grad, sent from Seattle to Toronto in Teoscar Hernandez trade
The Toronto Blue Jays traded outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to the Seattle Mariners for relief pitcher and Mariemont High School graduate Erik Swanson as well as left-handed pitching prospect Adam Macko.
Swanson, among players from Greater Cincinnati high schools/colleges on MLB rosters, posted very impressive numbers as part of the Mariners' bullpen last season - including a 1.68 ERA and 0.913 WHIP in 57 appearances. In 53 2/3 innings, he struck out 70, walked 10 and allowed just three home runs.
Entering his first year of arbitration eligibility, Swanson, 29, won't be a free agent until after the 2025 season.
In 2019, Swanson retired the Cincinnati Reds in order while striking out two in the top of the ninth inning of the Mariners' 11-5 loss in Seattle.

Erik Swanson, as Ben points out, has a Louboutin-looking Savant page. Seattle has done a truly excellent job over the last two years of growing relief arms -- Swanson, Paul Sewald, Andres Muñoz, Penn Murfee -- and traded from a strength to get Teoscar Hernández for next season. https://t.co/DEv2fq8w73

Heading back to Toronto in exchange for Teoscar Hernández are right-handed reliever Erik Swanson and left-handed starter Adam Macko, sources tell me and @kileymcd. Swanson had a 1.68 ERA last year while Macko was in High-A. Hernández is a free agent after the 2023 season.

I will definitely miss expressing how much I loathe NDSU football to Bison-fanatic @Erik_Swanson03 and talking about my favorite places in Vauxhall, Alberta with @adaaam_15 https://t.co/TXMiydPlGz

Toronto wanted to beef up its bullpen, and Erik Swanson is a very good late-inning option. Solid fastball, great splitter, really figured it out last year. Hernández is the middle-of-the-order bat the Mariners truly need. First on the return for him was the excellent @RyanDivish.

For Teoscar Hernandez, the Blue Jays are receiving from the Mariners: reliever Erik Swanson and LHP prospect Adam Macko. Swanson is being traded for a third time: 1st as part of package from Tex to NYY for Beltran, then from NYY to Sea as part of package for Paxton.

Erik Swanson was incredible in 2022.
1.68 ERA, 11.74 K/9, 1.68 BB/9, 1.7 fWAR.
Fastball only averages about 94 but pairs it with a nasty splitter— Josh Goldberg (@JGoldberg12) November 16, 2022
