Erik Johnson resigns as Almont softball coach, will focus on girls basketball program

One of Erik Johnson's two athletic programs has achieved its mission. Now he wants to focus exclusively on the other.

Johnson stepped down as coach of the Almont softball team after 13 seasons last month. He will remain the school's girls basketball coach.

"It's a lot of work to run two programs," Johnson said. "This is a good time to step back and catch my breath. I love softball, I love basketball and I love coaching. But it's time consuming and I'm in Year 26 of teaching now."

Added Johnson: "I think we had the success we were looking for (in softball). We've established a nice youth program. It was a good chance to step away. Now I can focus on basketball and put more time and energy into that."

The Raiders won three district championships (2014, 2016, 2019) in softball during his tenure. Since 2021, Almont is 71-22 overall.

"It was special," Johnson said of his time with the softball team. "I always go back to (the belief that) having a great experience is the goal. Winning is a byproduct of that and it was an important part. But what I'm most proud of is the development of the program over those 14 years.

"We play in a really tough league and it made us that much stronger. It just shows if you put the time and energy in — and the kids enjoy it and stick around — you'll start to see some success."

Almont is currently accepting applications for a new softball coach. Those interested can apply at www.almontathletics.com. Click on "Coaching Opportunities" in the menu at the top. The position will remain open until it's filled.
