Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky athletes of the week, Dec. 17

In a vote that ended Dec. 17, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Dec. 12.

Winners through Oct. 1 should have received a certificate through the school's athletic department. The next round will come out before the year's end.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to mlaughman@enquirer.com.

Here are this week's top choices:

Ohio boys basketball team: Williamsburg – With wins last week over Clinton-Massie and Whiteoak, the Wildcats are now 4-0 overall, their first 4-0 start since 2013.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Covington Catholic – The Colonels dominated in two wins, beating St. Henry 82-32 before a 72-35 win against La Salle.

Ohio girls basketball team: Cincinnati Country Day – The Nighthawks are 5-0 after a 53-40 win against Roger Bacon on Dec. 6.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Newport – After sweeping the Donna Murphy Classic, Newport returned to action with a 52-29 win against Valley to move to 5-0.

Boys winter team: Elder swimming and diving – On Dec. 8, they won the Best of The West meet, scoring a team total of 373 points. Elder swimmers took first place in two relays and five individual events.

Girls winter team: Seton swimming – Seton took first in the Best of the West meet, scoring 373 points to beat out Oak Hills and Mercy McAuley.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Tony Russell, Western Hills – The senior guard scored a season-high 22 points with 5 rebounds and 6 assists in the 107-69 win over Thurgood Marshall Dec. 11.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Ryan Mathison, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy – Mathison had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a 55-42 win over Clark Montessori.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: MacKenzie Givens, Walnut Hills – She had 18 points and pulled in four rebounds to help Walnut Hills top Little Miami, 48-33.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Tiffany Drewry, Clermont Northeastern – The junior forward scored 18 points with 11 rebounds and a steal in the Dec. 6 win over Bethel-Tate, 47-32.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Evan Ipsaro, Covington Catholic – He scored 24 points in the 72-35 home win over La Salle Dec. 10, adding another 28 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, a block and a steal in the 91-81 loss to Indianapolis Cathedral. What’s more, he had 21 points in the win over St. Henry, 82-32 Dec. 7.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: De'Ayjah White, Newport – The sophomore posted 26 points, 23 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists in a Dec. 11 road victory against Valley High School in Louisville, 52-29.

Boys bowler: Logan Bacher, Elder – The senior finished first with a 494 in the Holiday Classic, with team wins over Springboro and Mason.

Girls bowler: Natalie DiGiacomo, Turpin – She led her team to two wins last week over Anderson Dec. 10 and Lebanon Dec. 8. She bowled a 397 against Anderson (196, 201) and a 352 (148,201) over Lebanon.

Ice hockey: Matthew Langenderfer, St. Xavier – The sophomore scored two goals and assisted two others in the 11-0 win over Kilbourne Dec. 12.

Ohio boys swimmer and diver: John Good, Elder – At the Best of the West meet Dec. 8, the senior took first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 IM. He was also on the winning 200 medley relay, and the second-place 400 free relay as the Panthers won the meet for the second straight time.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys swimmer and diver: Alex Warning, Dixie Heights – The junior won the 2021 Woodford Invitation 11 dive Championship in Versailles, Kentucky, winning with a personal record score of 455.40. Last week, he also was the winner at the Milford Tri-meet Wednesday during their six-dive meet.

Girls swimmer and diver: Katie Pressler, Seton – Pressler won the 100 butterfly and 500 free at The Best of the West swim meet. She is also a member of the first-place 200 medley and 400 free relays, helping Seton win at Best of the West.

Ohio wrestler: Tristen Davis, Cincinnati Country Day – Davis secured four pinfalls at the Everette Howard Memorial Invitational Dec. 11, placing first in the 175 weight class. He capped his winning performance with a pinfall victory over Loveland’s Gavin Ritter.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana wrestler: Sebastian Vega, Conner – He finished second at 106 pounds in the Ryle Raider Rumble and is 11-1 overall.

Girls wrestler: Rylee Gust, Springboro – Gust is off to a 10-0 start this season, going 5-0 with as many pins in the Madison Girls Invitational last weekend.
