England vs Belgium - LIVE!

Jude Bellingham struck at the death to salvage England a deserved draw against Belgium on a night of impressive auditions in the final match before Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 selection.

Three days on from the late loss to Brazil, the absentee-hit Euro 2020 runners-up faced another high-level test as the side third in FIFA's world rankings hosted the team in fourth. England were heading for another Wembley defeat after Youri Tielemans punished first-half errors either side of Ivan Toney's penalty, only for Bellingham to secure a 2-2 draw in stoppage time.

Toney did well on his first start, as did fellow full debutants Ezri Konsa and, in particular, 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in the final friendly before Southgate names an expanded Euros squad on May 21.

There is the full-time whistle.

And he’s now having a few words with Onana after the match - all smiles in the end.

WITH THE LAST KICK!

Huge celebration from the Real Madrid star.

Watkins does superbly to keep the ball in play, Maddison flicks it back to Bellingham and he rolls the finish into the bottom corner.

Belgium clear, and Maddison then gives away a cheap free-kick. That will likely be that.

England 1-2 Belgium

Doku on the counter, picks out Lukebakio and he’s completely free, but sends a first-time effort way over the bar.

Doku loses it, Foden drives into the box... Vertonghen slams the door shut.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:31 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Bellingham cutting an increasingly frustrated figure. Fair few decisions that have irritated him - don’t think the two big misses have helped his mood either.

Chilwell down in the Belgium box, referee waves play on.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:28 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Batshuayi on for Lukaku, with Faes and Openda also introduced for Belgium.

Gordon drives inside, can’t find space for the shot though and the chance goes.

Dom Smith at Wembley

21:25 , Matt Verri

Foden definitely growing into the game and about as influential as any of England’s attackers in this second half.

So nearly finds the net.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:25 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Two more England changes.

Gordon and Watkins on for the final ten minutes, replacing Bowen and Toney.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:24 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Foden... wide!

Great play from Foden in the build-up, skipping away from the challenges and poking the ball into the path of Foden.

On his left foot, huge chance, drags it wide.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:22 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Belgium fans making plenty of noise now, they are enjoying their night at Wembley.

Bit of a lull in the match, neither side able to sustain the pressure.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:19 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Saying that, here is a change!

Mainoo off, superb performance from the teenager. Maddison on for England.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:17 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Vranckx on for Vranckx for Belgium.

No sign of Southgate turning to his bench yet. That early change, Gomez replacing Stones due to injury, the only England sub.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

21:12 , Matt Verri

Joe Gomez has had a bit of a nightmare defensively up against Jeremy Doku.

I really rate him generally speaking, but you wouldn't want him up against Kylian Mbappe in a semi-final against France on this evidence.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:12 , Matt Verri

67 mins: First yellow card of the night, and it goes to Gomez.

Doku again the man causing problems, he was about to embark on another run up the pitch before Gomez clipped him.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:10 , Matt Verri

66 mins: There are more goals in this match, surely.

Bellingham to the byline, stands the ball up. Toney brings it down into the path of Mainoo, just the goalkeeper to beat but Sels makes a really good save.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:10 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Ball down the line on the left looks certain to go out of play, but Doku has the pace to keep it in.

Skips away from Gomez, squares the ball for Lukaku and he blasts over from the edge of the box.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:08 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Nice move from England, as Gomez again gets forward down the right wing.

Cuts the ball back to Bowen, gets plenty on the first-time strike but Sels is down well to save.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:06 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Mainoo has been so, so impressive.

Castagne gets tight, the teenager rolls him brilliantly and he’s away. The full-back trips Mainoo, should be a yellow card but just a free-kick this time.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:05 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Belgium turn to their bench.

Trossard off, Lukebakio on for the final half an hour.

England 1-2 Belgium

21:02 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Belgium corner, as Doku has a shot block and then a cross deflected behind by Gomez.

England clear and look to break through Bowen, but Tielemans gets a foot in. Crucial that he did so.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

21:00 , Matt Verri

Feels like there's been an update to Foden's brief at half-time.

Not even ten minutes into this half, he's been much more involved and much more central.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:59 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Bellingham should score!

Gomez clips a lovely ball in, Bellingham completely free but he gets the header all wrong. Well wide.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:58 , Matt Verri

53 mins: England piling on the pressure all of a sudden, Belgium having to hang on.

Bowen in space in the box, picks out Foden and it’s a superb block to deny him.

Foden and Bellingham then very nearly combine, but there are too many blue shirts in the way.

Dom Smith at Wembley

20:57 , Matt Verri

Really good effort by Toney, who forces Sels into a top save.

So nearly the leveller for England, who have struggled to keep the ball in the early stages of this second half.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:57 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Much better.

Foden in a central position, lovely turn and he can drive into space.

Slides the pass through to Toney, his shot is turned into the side-netting. Fair few thought that was in.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:55 , Matt Verri

51 mins: England haven’t got going at all.

Doku allowed to run at the defence, Konsa sticks in a good foot on the edge of the area.

The hosts can’t get out - all Belgium.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:53 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Belgium have started this half on top.

Doku can’t quite pick out Lukaku as he cuts the ball back, but the visitors are swiftly back on the front foot.

Trossard this time with the cross - not his best.

Back underway!

20:49 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running again at Wembley - weather still absolutely miserable.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:43 , Matt Verri

England have conceded two dreadful goals, albeit with a patchwork defence.

Positives going the other way though: Toney, Mainoo and Bowen all impressive.

Brace for Tielemans!

20:37 , Matt Verri

He’s scored an FA Cup final winner at Wembley, and now he’s doubling up for his country.

Tielemans has enjoyed the first 45 minutes, particularly after that pass from Lukaku.

HT: England 1-2 Belgium

20:34 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time at Wembley.

England behind, with errors from Pickford and Dunk punished. Tielemans at the double.

Plenty of positives for England in attack, with Toney scoring his first England goal from the penalty spot.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:33 , Matt Verri

You can sense Phil Foden getting a little frustrated out on the left.

He's keeping his discipline in terms of position but he wants to be involved, wants to come into those spaces where Bellingham is doing his best work.

England need to find a way of getting more from the City man out there if they are to get him and Bukayo Saka into the same XI this summer.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:31 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Three minutes added on.

Been an entertaining watch - not always for the right reasons from an England perspective.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:29 , Matt Verri

Lukaku's looking to peel off the back of Dunk at every opportunity having rinsed him for that goal.

He pulls up in dismay as Theate declines the chance to drive another ball over the top into that channel.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:28 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Chance for England to put a decent ball into the middle, after winning a free-kick in a great position out wide.

Bowen whips it in, comfortably claimed by Sels.

England 1-2 Belgium

20:24 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Still get the feeling Belgium are going to gift England something when they are playing it out on the edge of their own area.

Not a lot of confidence when doing so, but just about getting away with it. For now.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:23 , Matt Verri

In the space of about an hour across these two friendlies, Lewis Dunk has surely succeeded in playing his way out of the Euros squad.

Wouldn't have minded a look at Jarrad Branthwaite tonight.

Dom Smith at Wembley

20:22 , Matt Verri

Dunk simply second best there. Lukaku ate up the ground on him as they both chased it, Dunk dived in ill-advisedly, and from there what a stunning goal. Lukaku, outside of the foot, into Tielemans for the diving header.

A double for him. England losing again after playing some decent stuff in the last 10.

GOAL! England 1-2 Belgium | Youri Tielemans 35'

20:21 , Matt Verri

Belgium back in front!

Lovely move, but it’s another England mistake.

Ball launched forward, Dunk for some reason goes to ground and makes no real contact.

Lukaku pounces, clips the ball to the back post and Tielemans heads it past Pickford.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:20 , Matt Verri

We've only had 33 minutes but I've seen enough to settle the Watkins vs Toney debate, as harsh as it is on the Villa man.

Toney is just so much more similar to Kane, so much more involved in England's build-up play.

He's bringing the likes of Foden, Bowen and Bellingham into the game.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:19 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Huge chance!

Belgium get themselves into an almighty mess playing out from the back.

Mainoo robs Onana on the edge of the box, comes to Bellingham and he lifts his finish over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat. Had to score.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:18 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Bowen wants his goal.

Foden with a lovely reverse pass and the West Ham man has space out wide.

Bellingham wants it cut back to the edge of the area, where he’s free. Goes for goal instead, blasted over.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:17 , Matt Verri

31 mins: The likes of Trossard and Lukaku have barely had a kick in the last 20 minutes or so.

England very much on top - plenty to enjoy about this performance so far.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:14 , Matt Verri

A shame for Jarrod Bowen, but some of the link play between him, Jude Bellingham and Ivan Toney has been superb considering they've not played together before.

NO GOAL!

20:13 , Matt Verri

Or not.

VAR check rules it out for offside. Bowen was the man standing on the goalkeeper, and the Belgium defence moved up.

It remains 1-1.

GOAL! England 2-1 Belgium | Jarrod Bowen 27'

20:12 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND LEAD!

Dunk wins the initial header from the corner, nodded into the middle and Bowen turns it home.

His first England goal.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:12 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Nearly an own goal!

Bowen slides the ball through to Bellingham, who keeps it in play on the byline and cuts it back.

Debast somehow turns it over the bar and onto the roof of the net from close range.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:10 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Lots of movement in that England midfield.

Mainoo getting forward at times, Foden dropping deep. Bellingham wherever he wants.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:08 , Matt Verri

Kobbie Mainoo just looks a complete natural. So smooth on the ball, picking it up between the lines.

The goal England conceded was poor, but Gareth Southgate will be thrilled with the starts of a couple of players with most to prove tonight.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:06 , Matt Verri

21 mins: This match has really opened up.

At one end, Doku skips inside onto his right foot, gets the shot away and Pickford saves.

England break well, as Toney holds the ball up and Mainoo bursts away in behind. He finds Bowen, swept out to Bellingham and his effort his saved.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:05 , Matt Verri

Quite enjoyed the complete lack of debate there over who would take the spot-kick.

Ivan Toney's 20 minutes into his first international start but his reputation goes before him.

Less than three years after scoring a penalty in the Championship playoff final on this ground, the Brentford striker has his first England goal.

England 1-1 Belgium

20:05 , Matt Verri

19 mins: England dominating the ball, more pace to their play now.

Mainoo and Bellingham combined nicely in the build-up to the move that won the penalty. Positive signs.

Dom Smith at Wembley

20:04 , Matt Verri

Ivan Toney's first England goal is, of course, a cool-as-you-like penalty.

GOAL! England 1-1 Belgium | Ivan Toney 17'

20:02 , Matt Verri

Toney made to wait, as VAR takes a look. Decision stands.

He’s usually so reliable from the spot... AND HE SCORES!

As calm as ever, Toney has his first England goal.

PENALTY ENGLAND!

20:01 , Matt Verri

That helps!

Bellingham slides the ball through to Toney, who goes down... referee points to the spot!

Vertonghen made the challenge from behind.

Malik Ouzia at Wembley

20:00 , Matt Verri

When you name an experimental side like this, you really want your established players performing at their best to help make a better judgement on the rest.

Inside 15 minutes, Gareth Southgate has lost John Stones and seen Jordan Pickford drop a clanger.

England 0-1 Belgium

19:59 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Southgate urging calm from his side. All got a bit ragged.

Wembley very quiet, waiting for something to burst this England team into life.

Dom Smith at Wembley

19:58 , Matt Verri

Genuinely calamitous goal to concede. Could have been scored on any five-a-side pitch up and down the country today.

Pickford’s poor distribution was the key error. Tielemans slid it home.

Ugly one to concede less than three months out from a tournament.

GOAL! England 0-1 Belgium | Youri Tielemans 11'

19:57 , Matt Verri

And now England are behind!

Fairly disastrous couple of minutes for the Three Lions.

It’s a shambles too. Pickford with a terrible kick out, Onana lays it off to Tielemans and he finds the the bottom corner, with Pickford wrong-footed.

A mess.

Dom Smith at Wembley

19:55 , Matt Verri

Disappointment for England to lose John Stones this early, and that means it’s now a very inexperienced England backline as Joe Gomez comes on.

Two Charlton Athletic academy graduates in the back four now, with Gomez joining Ezri Konsa in that regard.

England 0-0 Belgium

19:55 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Wow. England have got yet another injury issue to contend with.

Stones turns awkwardly and signals to the bench - he’s going to have to come off inside ten minutes.

Gomez on in his place.

England 0-0 Belgium

19:53 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Corner for England, up come the centre-backs.

Foden swings it in, Bellingham can’t get the flick on at the near post. England stay on the attack as Foden pings it back in... out of play.

England 0-0 Belgium

19:51 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Lukaku should do better as Belgium counter, but it’s a loose pass.

Chilwell decides to give the visitors another chance, as he gives it straight back to Belgium, but England scramble back to clear

England 0-0 Belgium

19:49 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Bellingham makes a run in behind on the right wing, holds the ball up really well and flicks a pass through to Bowen.

Offside flag goes up to halt that attack. England have made a positive start here though.

England 0-0 Belgium

19:47 , Matt Verri

1 min: Some start from England!

Bowen away down the right, fires a cross into the box and Toney throws himself at the ball.

He got across his man, but turns the ball onto his own hand. Free-kick.

Rice hopes White rethinks England snub

19:34 , Matt Verri

Declan Rice says he hopes Arsenal team-mate Ben White will change his mind on his decision not to play for England.

Gareth Southgate revealed recently that White made himself unavailable for England selection. Arsenal’s sporting director Edu had phoned FA technical director John McDermott to inform him of White’s direction.

The defender has had an excellent season for Arsenal but went home early from the 2022 World Cup squad due to “personal reasons” and no longer wishes to be picked for his country.

Rice said: “Obviously, Ben, if you know him as a person and as a player like I do, he’s such a good guy. He’s such a good guy and he’s an unbelievable footballer.

“Gareth, dealt with it this week, spoke about it. We’ve obviously not been going into the training grounds, so I haven’t spoken to Ben on a one-to-one level about it.”

Rice continued: “It’s hard to know, really, what’s going on. Ben made this decision. Obviously he doesn’t want to play for England at this moment in time.

“Gareth has had a conversation with him about it and there’s not much else I can really say to him.

“Playing for England is the greatest honour you could ever have. So hopefully, with the quality that he has and the quality he can bring to this side, we can get him back in.”

So many England stars out injured - those involved tonight need to impress.

Southgate: Toney has the self-belief

19:04 , Matt Verri

Gareth Southgate believes Ivan Toney has the “swagger” required to seize tonight’s rare England chance, as the Brentford striker looks to force his way into the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 plans.

Toney, recalled this month for the first time since serving his betting ban, makes his first England start.

With Harry Kane injured, Ollie Watkins was given 90 minutes to impress in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Brazil and the Brentford forward appears to be in direct competition with the Aston Villa striker for one spot on the plane to Germany.

“You can’t hide that fact,” Southgate said of the scale of Toney’s opportunity. “He knows. It would be his first [international] start, so you’ve got to bear that in mind as well. But, with England, that’s the landscape, you don’t get hundreds of opportunities.

“He’s a confident guy, he comes in on the back of a good run of form with his club. He’s going to be on the field on Tuesday, no question. That swagger, that self-belief is crucial. All of the top forward players have it.”

Rice backs Mainoo to deliver

18:57 , Matt Verri

Declan Rice says “the sky is the limit” for Kobbie Mainoo.

The Arsenal midfielder has been impressed by Mainoo after seeing him close up and said: “Every time I’ve seen him playing for United on the TV, he has been pretty much their best player every game.

“In training, the composure he shows, the little touches he takes in tight areas is really impressive for an 18-year-old. I’ve been asked a lot by my friends, ‘What’s Mainoo like?’ and he’s really, really impressive.

“I have come across so many 18-year-olds who are top players but don’t have that full package, just because of who they are as a person, but he is so level-headed.

“I saw his family the other night after the game, and you can tell they are a really closely connected, loving family. That bodes well for a player to really go and push on.”

The pair start in midfield tonight, alongside Jude Bellingham, with this a potential sign of things to come ahead of the Euros.

Rice said: “I really want him to enjoy his career. It’s important we don’t put too much pressure on him. He’s at one of the biggest clubs in the world and now he’s at England, and we just want to let him flourish.

“But the sky is the limit for him and I am looking forward to hopefully playing many games for England with him.”

Mainoo in line for full England debut

18:18 , Matt Verri

Kobbie Mainoo could be handed his first start for England tonight, with Jordan Henderson unavailable through injury.

Asked whether he would pick Mainoo or instead move Jude Bellingham back to partner Declan Rice, Southgate replied: “We have a couple of options with that. We have looked at both of those things in training across the week, so definitely Kobbie has a chance for tomorrow.”

“He seems very calm,” Southgate said of Mainoo.

“You can see he is taking everything in. Talking to him tactically, he seems able to take all those concepts on. A lot of young players now, with their academy education, are able to do that.

“You can see his comfort with the ball and receiving in tight areas. There are a lot of steps being taken in a very short period of time, but you saw in the brief cameo the other day some of the qualities he has.

“Sometimes, with the really young ones, they are not even thinking about that. It is all flowing and maybe then as you get a bit older you start to think about it a bit more. It is a beautiful, innocent moment when he is just in the flow and lapping up the opportunities as they come.”

Rice handed England armband

18:00 , Matt Verri

Declan Rice says he was left “speechless” after being asked to captain England for the first time on the occasion of his 50th cap.

Regular captain Harry Kane has returned to Bayern Munich for treatment on an ankle injury, while Kyle Walker, who led the side in Saturday’s friendly defeat to Brazil, limped off after 20 minutes and has now gone back to Manchester City.

With a number of other senior players, including the likes of Jordan Henderson, Kieran Trippier and Harry Maguire, also sidelined, Southgate has instead handed Rice the armband in the latest sign of his growing importance to the Three Lions.

"I’m speechless, to be honest, absolutely lost for words,” the Arsenal midfielder said. “When [Southgate] said to me last night I was going to be captain, I gave him a hug, shook his hand and said: ‘thank you very much’.

“I owe him a lot. Since I first came into the team, he’s always made me feel at home. I’ve felt so comfortable playing under him and I’ve really grown in confidence. On my 50th cap, to walk out at Wembley in front of my family and friends, it’s an absolute honour.”

England to wear nameless shirts

17:53 , Matt Verri

England will have a different look about them for the second half tonight.

Their shirts will have no names on them after the break as the match has been dedicated as an ‘Alzheimer’s Society International’ as part of the Football Association (FA) and Alzheimer’s Society’s official charity partnership.

The nameless shirts originally appeared at the first Alzheimer's Society International against Switzerland at Wembley in 2022, and are being repeated against Belgium.

The gesture is to support the Alzheimer’s Society and in recognition of the 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK.

The names will disappear from the England players’ shirts when they return to the pitch after half-time against Belgium, to highlight how people with dementia lose vital memories - even the names of their favourite footballers.

The custom shirts are being donated by the England squad and auctioned to raise funds to support the Alzheimer’s Society’s research into early diagnosis.

England team news

17:28 , Matt Verri

Gareth Southgate is set to hand a number of England hopefuls a final chance to impress in tonight’s friendly with Belgium.

On Sunday night, Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and Sam Johnstone all left the camp, following the withdrawals of Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane earlier in the international break.

In better news, Southgate confirmed Chelsea star Cole Palmer could be involved after missing Saturday’s defeat to Brazil with a minor problem, while Jude Bellingham is fit despite suffering with cramp in that game.

Declan Rice will captain the side as he wins his 50th cap, while Ivan Toney is set to make his first England start up-front.

Kobbie Mainoo could do likewise in midfield and Jarrad Branthwaite is hoping for an international debut.
