Elmira-Corning Boys Soccer: Top players, team outlooks for 2023 season

Corning takes a streak of three consecutive Section 4 Class AA championships into the boys soccer season and early results show the Hawks have the firepower to make it four straight.

The Hawks scored 35 goals in winning their first four games and senior Carter Rosno notched his 42nd goal during that stretch to become the all-time leading goal-scorer in program history.

This is the first season the New York State Public High School Athletic Association includes a Class AAA in soccer and some other sports, increasing the number of sectional and state champions from five to six.

Corning and Elmira are the lone AAA schools in Section 4, so that final is set. Class AA includes Ithaca, Binghamton, Horseheads, Vestal and Union-Endicott.

Outlook: "This team is very technically sound with great tactical understanding as well," Freelove said. "They work very hard at training sessions and they understand what it is going to take to maintain the level of success there has been in these past handful of years at (Corning-Painted Post). There are some big shoes to fill, but we are confident they can accomplish it.

"Every night out every team in this conference will have to bring their best game. We look forward to seeing how this group responds to the challenges ahead."

Outlook: The Blue Raiders had what Mark Mucci described as an "injury plagued campaign" but over the years have shown the ability to compete with the best teams in Section 4. Said Mucci: "Several strong technical players within the starting 11 should help the team to maintain possession and move the ball up the pitch. Several players are entering into their third season at the varsity level and bring with them their experience and tactical understanding of the game. We have a good group of newcomers and are looking for a few to provide some valuable minutes. STAC West will be very competitive this season."
