Anthony basketball player Carlos Gameros is this week's El Paso Times' Jarritos Athlete of the Week. He scored 30 points in wins vs. Fabens and Austin.

Here are this week's top four vote getters:

  • Carlos Gameros, Anthony basketball, 50.28 percent, 27,408 votes

  • Kevin Hernandez, Bowie soccer, 31.62 percent, 17,234 votes

  • Sebastian Gutierrez, Montwood basketball, 7.83 percent, 4,267 votes

  • Mateo Lares, Eastlake basketball, 4.67 percent, 2,545 votes

The El Paso Times will be honoring high school athletes this year on a weekly basis that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week at 2 p.m. each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at fchavez@elpasotimes.com or by contacting Felix Chavez through social media on X (formerly Twitter).

Here are this week's nominees:

  • Aylin Garcia, Clint basketball. She scored 27 points and had 12 rebounds for the Lions in win vs. San Elizario.

  • Kevin Hernandez, Bowie soccer. Scored multiple goals for the Bears at Edgewood Tournament and was selected MVP of the tournament.

  • Mateo Lares, Eastlake basketball. He made the game 3-pointer for the Falcons against Pebble Hills and played key role in team's win against Eastwood.

  • Erica Cobos, Americas wrestler. Won the 235-pound title at the Cy Fair Tournament and had a 41-second pin in the finals.

  • Donovan Mozer, Canutillo basketball. Mozer scored 15 points in win vs. Hanks and scored 18 points in victory vs. Bel Air in triple overtime.

  • Carlos Gameros, Anthony basketball. He scored 30 points in wins vs. Fabens and Austin.

  • Cydney Davis, Bel Air wresting. Fared well at the Lady Horns Classic, winning the 152-pound division in bracket. One of the top wrestlers in state.

  • Sebastian Gutierrez, Montwood basketball. Gutierrez had 22 points and eight rebounds and 10 points and 12 rebounds in two wins last week for the Rams in District 1-6A.
