QB sets record as Moeller ends Mason’s hot streak

Mason came into its Division I, Region 4 semifinal against Moeller winner of three straight and allowing only 19 points total in its last four games.

Moeller found a weakness in that defense, routing the Comets 38-3 to end Mason’s season at 7-6. It was the most points allowed all season by Mason and only  the third time the Comets have allowed more than 20 points.

In the process, Ponatoski set the school’s all-time record for passing yards in a season, now with 2,975. He has 29 TD passes against only eight interceptions.

Moeller will face another stout defense in Lakota West this week in the regional final.

Lakota West flips the script on Princeton with improved offense

Both were interceptions by Finn Mason, one to set up a field goal and another that he returned 72 yards for a pick-six to give the Firebirds that 19-7 margin and a two-score lead.

Anderson, Withrow set up showdown for DII regional title

Anderson’s defense took a step back in the Division II, Region 8 semifinals, as the Raptors and rival Harrison had a classic offensive shootout that they’ve been in before. Anderson outlasted the Wildcats 50-36, ending Harrison’s season at 7-4. Harrison was only 1-9 last season.

The Tigers, now 12-1, have never played in a regional final. They have allowed fewer than six points per game as they go up against the high-powered Raptors this week in a must-see matchup.

Three teams pull out thrillers

Three Cincinnati teams went up north and pulled rabbits out of the hat to keep their seasons alive.

Badin trailed Wapakoneta 10-0 for most of their Division III, Region 12 semifinal. The Rams scored two touchdowns in the last four minutes of the game, the game-winner a 10-yard TD pass from Alex Ritzie to Carson Cheek with just two seconds left to win 14-10.

Wyoming trailed Springfield Shawnee 20-7 early in the fourth quarter after Shawnee scored twice in the first minute of the period. Wyoming scored a TD with eight minutes left then scored another one with just 1:03 left for a 21-20 win. Shawnee finished 11-2. Wyoming, now 12-1, faces Alter in the regional final this week.

Waynesville beat Brookville 45-42 in double overtime in a Division V, Region 20 semifinal. The Spartans will get a rematch with league rival Valley View in the regional final. Waynesville, now 11-2, won 49-40 on Oct. 20.

To get there, Waynesville got six touchdowns from Garrett Lundy for the second consecutive game, including a 24-yard TD catch to tie the game late in regulation. He also scored on a TD catch in the first overtime.

In the second OT, Connor Berrey’s 31-yard field goal provided the winning points after the Spartans stopped Brookville on the next possession.

Two unbeatens see their seasons end

Cincinnati Country Day was on the wrong end of a blowout for the first time this season. The Nighthawks lost 55-13 to Versailles in a Division VI, Region 24 semifinal, ending their season at 12-1.

'You're perfect exactly how you are': CCD blowout loss not reflective of season

Clinton-Massie’s bid for a second state championship in three seasons ended with a 21-3 loss to Alter in Division IV. CM finished 12-1. Alter, 10-3 and winner of five straight, will play Wyoming in the Division IV, Region 16 championship game this week.

East Central moves one step closer

Evansville Memorial has been a tough playoff opponent for East Central in recent years. Not this time, as the Tigers were the latest victim in East Central’s rampage through the 2023 season.

The Trojans rolled over EM 47-7 in a Class 4A regional final. The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in 4A in the final Associated Press state poll, will host No. 3 New Palestine in the state semifinals this Friday.

Against Evansville Memorial, Josh Ringer rushed for 214 yards and five touchdowns and now has a phenomenal 2,521 rushing yards and 50 TDs this season, plus five receiving scores.

Dylan Maxwell rushed for 117 yards. Ryan Brotherton scored two touchdowns.

Brayden Rouse led EC with nine tackles, 1.5 for loss as the Trojans limited the Tigers to 200 total yards. Connor Kuhn had a sack. Eli Ertel forced a fumble and Braden Becknell had five tackles and a fumble recovery.

Cooper, Ryle win big in big games

The Jaguars extended their winning streak to six games as they traveled to Scott County and beat the Cardinals 49-21. It was another offensive showcase for Cooper, which has now scored 40 or more points in seven of its last eight games.

The winning streak means that Cooper has won multiple playoff games in a season for the first time since 2015 when the Jaguars were in Class 6A. Looking at the rest of this season and even into next year, Cooper has a chance to emulate what it did in 2014 and 2015, when it made the state semifinals and won five postseason games in a two-year span.

Cooper quarterback Cam O'Hara led the Jaguars to victory over Scott County with three passing touchdowns and his first rushing touchdown of the season.

Cooper will now travel to Southwestern for a Class 5A state quarterfinal game on Friday, Nov. 17. The Warriors are 9-3 after blowout wins over East Jessamine and Pulaski County in the playoffs.

Ryle had won three straight close games in the second half of the season. Now, the Raiders are rolling, having outscored their opponent 155-41 in the last three games.

Their most recent win was a very impressive win over the defending Class 6A state champion Bullitt East, which had been in the top-10 of the Kentucky media poll all season.

This is the first time since 2021 that Ryle has won multiple postseason games. Next up is a trip to Bryan Station to face off against the Defenders, who have won four straight games by at least 33 points.

Ludlow gets revenge on Newport

A 16-14 home loss to Newport on Sept. 15 didn't sit well with the Panthers. They responded in the second week of the Class 1A playoffs by beating the Wildcats 28-6.

After a blowout loss to Paris in the regular season finale, Ludlow has brought out the defense by allowing just 20 points in its last two games. Newport's lone score came in the first quarter as the Panthers gave up just 109 total yards.

Ludlow also showed discipline as it was called for two penalties in the entire game.

Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Louisville to face Kentucky Country Day. The Bearcats lost the last two games of the regular season, but have been in the top-five of the Class 1A statewide media poll all season.
