Early lead not enough for Christian Heritage in loss to defending region, state champions

Oct. 13—Christian Heritage School grabbed an early 7-0 lead in the Lions' region opener against defending Region 7-A DII and state champion Bowdon.

That early lead quickly vanished as the state champs piled up points.

The Lions (3-5, 0-1 Region 7-A DII) fell 48-17 to Bowdon (7-2, 1-0 Region 7-A DII) on the road Friday in the first of two region contests for Christian Heritage this season.

The Lions traveled down the field on the first drive of the game, and Sawyer Corn capped the drive with a 4-yard rushing score.

Then, Christian Heritage saw four straight Bowdon drives end in quick touchdowns before the first quarter ended.

Quarterback Kyler McGrinn rushed for a 57-yarder, then hit Devan Powell for a 78-yard pass. Jordan Beasley scored on a 16-yard run, and McGrinn capped the quarter with a 1-yard plunge.

Beasley added another short TD run early in the second quarter, but Christian Heritage kicker Carson Russell hit a 39-yard field goal to cut the score to 35-10. McGrinn connected with Beasley to put Bowdon ahead 42-10 at halftime.

With a running clock after half, McGrinn threw one final touchdown pass late in the third quarter before Christian Heritage freshman Haydon Murdock scored an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Christian Heritage quarterback Carter Triplett finished 10-for-24 with 151 yards, and Charlie Idom caught seven passes for 77 yards.

Bowdon totaled 588 yards of offense.

Christian Heritage will step back out of region play to face Asheville Christian from North Carolina next week before finishing with Mt. Zion in the final region game. The Lions host Asheville Christian on Friday at 7 p.m.
