Due to pending litigation, multiple-time transfers will be eligible immediately next season

Mar. 18—GRAND FORKS — Due to pending litigation, multiple-time transfers will be eligible immediately next season without having to secure a waiver.

The NCAA sent out guidance on the issue last week.

It stems from a court case in West Virginia challenging NCAA transfer rules.

Judge John Preston Bailey of the Northern District of West Virginia issued a temporary restraining order Dec. 13. It was converted to a preliminary injunction on Dec. 18, allowing multiple-time transfers to be eligible immediately.

This allowed UND men's basketball player Tyree Ihenacho to play this season.

The NCAA posted this memo with a couple of key transfer windows opening for non-graduate students.

"It is not certain at this time whether the preliminary injunction will remain in effect during the 2024-25 season," the memo says. "However, as long as the undergraduate student-athlete provides written notification of transfer consistent with the windows set forth in Figure 13-1 (or meets an applicable exception set forth in Bylaw 13.1.1.3.1.1 or complies with notice rules of the applicable division or association) during the 2023-24 academic year, the student-athlete will not be subject to Bylaw 14.5.5.1 during the 2024-25 academic year."

The men's and women's basketball transfer portal window is March 18-May 1.

The window for

men's hockey is March 31-May 14.

This could increase the number of athletes entering the transfer portal.

Last year, a

record 291 Division-I men's hockey players

entered the transfer portal.
