Drury shuts out ENMU 3-0

Sep. 9—KEARNEY, Neb. — Drury scored one goal early and one late on Friday morning and the Panthers posted a 3-0 neutral-site women's soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday morning, handing the Greyhounds (1-1-2) their first loss of the season.

ENMU was scheduled to play another neutral-site game today at Nebraska-Kearney, taking on Quincy (Ill.) in a morning matchup.

The Springfield, Mo.-based Panthers (2-1) got on the board in the second minute when junior midfielder Tara Simon found the back of the net on an assist by senior midfielder Hailey Kemmer. Freshman forward Danielle Buker made it 2-0 in the 18th minute before senior defender Andrea Camargo tallied off an assist from freshman forward Bella Hernandez with just over a minute left in the contest.

Drury had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks over the Hounds.

After today's matchup, the Hounds return to action on Friday against Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colo.

ENMU 2, New Mexico Highlands 1 (Wednesday) — In ENMU's home opener at Greyhound Stadium, the in-state rivals saved most of the action for the final few minutes.

ENMU took a 1-0 lead with just over five minutes left, but needed a tally from senior midfielder Emma Hafenbrack with 90 seconds remaining to claim a 2-1 win over the Cowgirls. All three goals were scored in a span of less than 3 1/2 minutes.

It was hard work, though. The Hounds barely prevailed even though NMHU, playing its season opener, was forced to go with just 10 players over the final 63 minutes after sophomore defender Gentri Granere was issued a red card in the 27th minute.

It took until the 85th minute for the Hounds to break through. Senior midfielder Nina Ballesteros poked in a cross from junior defender Raegan Dash.

Just 11 seconds later, NMHU pulled even on a goal by sophomore forward Kate Rayner deflected an attempted clearing pass by the Hounds into the next.

ENMU got the winner when Hafenbrack squeezed a left-footed shot past Cowgirls goalkeeper Parker Frei.

ENMU finished with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, with senior keeper Samantha Jeffries notching three saves. The Hounds posted a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.

Men's soccer — ENMU battled to a 3-3 tie on Friday against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Westminster (Utah) in a neutral field match hosted by Colorado Mesa at Grand Junction, Colo. Both squads are 1-1-1 for the season.

The contest against the Salt Lake City-based Griffons was back and forth. Sophomore forward Gini Mascarel scored midway through the half, but barely a minute later Westminster tied it on a goal by freshman Cam Neeley before taking a 2-1 lead on a tally by sophomore defender Ole Songe in the 32nd minute.

ENMU countered with goals from sophomore forward Matteo Azambuja and freshman midfielder Ignacio Lopez in a span of just over four minutes early in the second half, but the advantage was short lived. Sophomore forward Jack Cardwell's tally only 43 seconds after the goal by Lopez tied the score again, and it stayed that way.

ENMU was slated to wrap up its second Colorado stay of the season, taking on host Colorado Mesa on Saturday night. The Hounds are slated to open their home schedule on Saturday with a 5 p.m. matchup against South Dakota Mines at Greyhound Stadium.
