Drury basketball takes winning streaks on the road

Both Drury teams are on the road tonight at Upper Iowa and both squads enter the game having won three straight. The women’s game gets underway at 5 p.m., with the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

The Drury men’s team is 10-5 and 3-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after their 89-82 win on Saturday over Missouri S&T. Drury’s leading scorer for the season, forward Juok Riak, was a last-minute scratch from the Panthers line-up on Saturday with a neck injury, but Drury found a way to get past the Miners. After trailing 42-40 at halftime, the Panthers held Missouri S&T to 39% shooting from the field 5 for 18 from three-point range. Sophomore Logan Applegate had 27 points and senior forward Riley Naeger made up for Riak’s absence with 23 points on 8 for 8 shooting from the field.

Upper Iowa is in its first year in the GLVC and enters tonight’s game with 9-5 record and a 4-2 mark in the conference. The Peacocks feature the league’s leading scorer, Jake Hilmer, who is averaging 25.1 points.

Applegate averaged 26 points in two games last week and is averaging 15 points per game for the season. The Nevada, Missouri, product leads the GLVC in three-pointers made, averaging 2.9 per game. Riok is putting in 15.2 points per game.

After Thursday’s game, the Panthers travel to Truman State for a 3 p.m. game Saturday.

The Lady Panthers have also won three straight games and finished a three-game homestand with a 101-64 win over Missouri S&T on Saturday. Forward Reese Schaaf scored a career-high 29 points in the game to lead Drury.

Drury is 11-4 and 6-3 in the GLVC heading into tonight’s game against Upper Iowa. The Peacocks are 7-5 and 4-4 in the conference.

Beth Matas Martin leads the Lady Panthers with a 15.5 scoring average. The graduate student from Spain leads the GLVC in three-point percentage, hitting 46% of her shots from behind the arc and her 45 made threes also lead the conference. Schaaf is averaging 14.9 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Drury travels to Truman State on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match-up in Kirksville.

Schaaf named GLVC Player of the Week

Drury Lady Panthers forward Reese Schaaf has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball for her performance in two games last week.

Schaaf averaged 24 points, 15.5 rebounds, and shot 61% from the field last week as the Lady Panthers went 2-0. She hit 20 of her 33 shots from the field and made 8 of 9 free throw attempts. The sophomore from El Dorado Springs also averaged 2.5 assists and one blocked shot per game.

Schaaf started the week with 19 points and 17 rebounds against Maryville on Thursday. Her 17 boards matched a season-high by any player in the GLVC this season. She followed that by scoring a career-high 29 points and pulling down 14 rebounds on Saturday against Missouri S&T. Schaaf went 12 for 15 from the field in Saturday's win over the Miners.
