Drew Laguerre's 5 goals paces Lincoln-Sudbury boys lacrosse past Franklin, 16-7

SUDBURY - The temperature had just dropped below 90, and someone was due to get hot.

Franklin first. Then Lincoln-Sudbury.

After a wild, 10-goal first quarter, the sun dropped below the trees, shadows and a coolish breeze enveloped Myers Field. More of a possession game followed.

But Drew Laguerre never cooled off.

The senior captain scored five goals and was one of three players with hat tricks to lead the Lincoln-Sudbury boys lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Franklin on a warm Wednesday night.

L-S handed the Panthers just their third loss of the season and was in control after falling behind 3-1 seven minutes into the game. The Warriors called a timeout after Drew Hansen’s spectacular behind-the-back goal put Franklin up two goals.

L-S responded eight of the next nine tallies for a 9-4 lead at the half.

“We just needed a second to take a deep breath and realize it’s just lacrosse,” said Laguerre, who had three goals by the intermission. “At the beginning of the game, we were a little nervous.”

A large crowd turned out for a rare game at the football stadium as the L-S program celebrated Youth Night. The Warriors (10-6) put on quite a show for the youngsters.

Sophomore Rex Friedholm scored 45 seconds into the game and finished with two goals and three assists. Classmates Brendan Dooley and Brady Malo also found the net three times.

L-S stopped Franklin’s four-game win streak.

“Frankin: great program,” Friedholm said. “We just wanted it.”

When the Warriors convened for their crucial early timeout, they pushed the reset button.

“We all just looked at each other and said: ‘we can’t let this happen,’” Friedholm said. “We can’t roll over. We fought back and got the outcome we wanted.”

Franklin (15-3) scored the first goal of the second half, but Lincoln-Sudbury responded with five consecutive tallies – two each by Laguerre and Dooley – and the Warriors began warming up reserve players to enter the game.

L-S coach Brian Vona credited defensemen Peter Rossi and Kevin Abair – his “non-stars” - with strong games in the back.

“Those guys really set the tone,” Vona said.

Goalie Rex Garozzo also played well.

L-S has just one regular-season game remaining: Friday at home against Billerica.

Asked how his team is playing heading into next week’s playoffs, Vona still isn’t sure.

“I’ll let you know Friday,” he said.
