Draft Wire mock has Texans taking LSU CB Derek Stingley in Round 1 of 2022 NFL draft

The Houston Texans may have a quandary at quarterback by the time the 2022 NFL draft rolls around.

According to Luke Easterling of the Draft Wire, in his latest mock draft, a weak quarterback class forces the Texans to consider going defense with their No. 3 overall pick.

The Texans will probably need a quarterback, but there’s not one worth taking here, especially with the amount of elite prospects available at other positions. Stingley is among them, as this year’s top corner prospect, and Houston’s weak roster simply needs as much blue-chip talent as it can get.

The first quarterback off the board is Nevada’s Carson Strong, who goes No. 9 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers as yet another successor to Ben Roethlisberger. The Indianapolis Colts with the following pick take Ole Miss’ Matt Corral, and then Washington selects Liberty’s Malik Willis on the next pick. That is quite the shift from Spencer Rattler and Sam Howell, who were hyped throughout the offseason.

If Houston went with Stingley, it would signal that Davis Mills is the answer at quarterback heading into his second season. Maybe with an entire offseason under his belt, taking first-team reps at that, he could effectively lead the offense, especially if general manager Nick Caserio surrounds him with additional dynamic weapons.
