Dozens of area wrestlers earn top finishes at SD state youth championships

Mar. 18—RAPID CITY — Dozens of area wrestlers were among those to finish their youth wrestling seasons on the medal stand at the South Dakota AAU Youth Wrestling Tournament on March 15-17 in Rapid City.

In the girls tots division, there were two area state champions. Vera VandenHoek won the 37-pound title for Platte/Geddes, topping Mount Vernon/Plankinton's Laken Geidel in the championship match. White Lake's Jeana Falk won the 46-pound title over Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney's Peyton Tiesler in the title match. Andes Central/Dakota Christian's Jordee Hjelm won the heavyweight division in the age group but was the only entrant in the bracket. Other top finishers in the age group included Mitchell's Elise Lauritsen (second at 67), Hanson's Jemma Degen (second at 49) and Gregory's Keviana Sundquist (fifth at 53).

In the boys tots (ages 6-under) competition, three area wrestlers won state titles. Platte/Geddes' Wesley Tegethoff won the 49-pound title, while Wagner's Klay Kokesh was tops at the 57-pound class and Zayden Wolfcale of Pony Hills won the title at 67 pounds over Winner's Emmett Schroeder. Also earning top finishes in the class were: Howard's Alan Petersen (second at 43) and Wriglee Cadwallader (second at heavyweight), Scotland's Bruce Neth (fifth at 46), Gregory's Max Lane (fifth at heavyweight). Mitchell's Jase Dobesh (fourth at 57) and Charles VanOverschelde (seventh at 49) both landed on the medal stand.

Girls bantam (ages 7-8) top-five finishers included: Platte/Geddes' Elsie Konechne (second at 47), Pony Hills' Mary Tanke (second at 53), Scotland's Madelyn Trautmann (fourth at 40), Mitchell's Isabella Alarcon (fifth at 61) and Keena Lauritsen (fifth at 70), ACDC's Suttyn Bergin (second at heavyweight), Scotland's Hudsyn Tjeerdsma (third at heavyweight), Pony Hills' Presley Wilde (fourth at 50) and Dally Nickels (fourth at 65).

Boys bantam (ages 7-8) state champions included McCoy Heinrich, of Dimock, who wrestles for the American Outlaws club at 47 pounds. Chamberlain's Denver Rinehart won the title at 91 pounds, topping Leo Hoffmann, of McCook Central/Montrose, in the championship. Kharis Dion, of ACDC, won the heavyweight division title over Chamberlain's Hutch Mosel. Boys bantam placewinners in the top-five included: American Outlaws' Jory Heinrichs (second at 53) and Jayce Gukeisen (third at 83), Chamberlain's Iven Meyer (second at 76), Winner's Karsten Storms (third at 65), Lucchese Helkenn (third at 76) and Tyton Sharp (third at 91), MVPCS' Ethan Kline (third at 40), MCM's Eli Schierholz (fifth at 40), Platte/Geddes' Bennett Michael (fourth at 50), Marion/Freeman's Ashton Preheim (fourth at 61), Gregory's Rage Kepler (fifth at heavyweight) and Pony Hills' Kix Coleman (fifth at 47).

In the girls midget (age 9-10) division, Sakura Bainter, of McCook Central/Montrose, won the 55-pound weight class by defeating MVPCS' Haylee Reimnitz in the title round. Ellie Bult won the 96-pound division for Bon Homme with a pin in the championship. Other top-five finishers included: Bon Homme's Kendle Hartnett (second at 50), McCook Central/Montrose's Julia Schierholz (third at 50), Platte/Geddes' Tessa Vandenhoek (fourth at 50), Platte/Geddes' Roslyn Konechne of Platte/Geddes (second at 60), Elle Houdeshell (third at 65), Mitchell's Ellie Dobesh (fourth at 70), Scotland's Peyton Runyon (third at 110), ACDC's Tessa Nielsen (second at 125) and Brynlee Kaczor (third at 84), Marion/Freeman's Alaska Foht (second at 77), Bon Homme's Willow Selwyn (third at 77) and Eisley Campbell (fifth at 55), Wagner's Rachel Holzbauer (fifth at 77).

Winners in the boys (age 9-10) midgets division included Mitchell's Keaton Ehlke, who won by decision in the championship match at the 113 division. Gregory's Liam Lane won the heavyweight division with a pin. Other top finishers in the boys midget division include: MCM's Maddox Bainter (second at 59), Pony Hills's Kaddilac Coleman (third at 53), Winner's Rhogan Robbins (fifth at 59), American Outlaws' Kaejrick Clark (fifth at 63), Howard's Deekan Feldhaus (fourth at 50), MVPCS' Bryce Hjelm (third at 123), Lyman's Leo Lingemann (second at 134) and Hooper Sazue (fourth at 113) and ACDC's Samuel Ulrich (fifth at heavyweight).

Area leaders in the girls novice (age 11-12) division included Bon Homme's Harper Kracht, who finished first at 110 pounds. Other placewinners in the age group include: Mitchell's Ava Brown (third at 100), American Outlaws' Teagan Heinrich (third at 60), MCM's Khloe Sauers (third at 110), Bon Homme's Olivia Pechous (third at heavyweight), Gregory's Rowan Wenger (fourth at 66).

In the boys novice division (age 11-12), Kimball's Boston Myers won the 175-pound title at the age group with a 2-0 decision over Howard's Kreyton Karstens. Tucker Tjeerdsma, of Bon Homme, won the 150-pound title by decision over Scotland's Carson Pietz. Other top finishers included: Mitchell's Micah Bennett (fifth at 87) and Benson Wagner (eighth at 60); Wagner's Thomas Krcil (third at 93), Platte/Geddes' Wyatt VandenHoek (second at 68), Winner's Kyan Bartels (second at 127), Bon Homme's Colt Wolf (fifth at 93), MVPCS' Noah Reimnitz (fifth at 68), Scotland's Lucas Walloch (third at 117) and Eli Mehlhaff (fourth at 87), White Lake's Dustin Johnson (fourth at 175), Chamberlain's Axel Steele (fifth at heavyweight).

For the Schoolgirl division (Age 13-14), top-five finishers included Canistota's Lola Conn (fourth at 105) and Hanson's Elliott Abbey (fourth at 98).

In the age 13-14 Schoolboy division, Winner's Roukyn Robbins won the title at 105 pounds with a technical fall in the championship round. Mitchell's Noah Bennett won the title at 115 pounds, with a 9-0 major decision against Tea Area's Slater Wilson in the final. Bon Homme's Devonne Sesler was third in the division, as well. Among the additional winners in the division were Bon Homme's Thayne Tjeerdsma, who won at 160 pounds, teammate Jaden Bult at 140 pounds, a 1-0 winner by decision over MVPCS' Preston Nedved. Scotland's Lane Pavel won his title at 215 pounds with a pin, while Gregory's Avery Sengelmann won the title at 150 pounds with a technical fall in the final.

Other Schoolboy placewinners included: Wagner's Frankie Krcil (second at 90), Chamberlain's Brylee Brennan (third at 120), Bon Homme's Asher Hellmann (fourth at 90), Parkston's Sutton Leischner (third at 70) and Bentlee Aragon (fifth at 75), Howard's Gabe Miller (third at 90), Gregory's Austin Vosika (third at heavyweight), Mitchell's Carter Radel was on the state podium, as well (eighth at 125).

In the 16-and-under Cadet division, Winner's Rylan Robbins won the 113-pound division, while teammate Legend Benedict was second at 175 pounds. Mitchell was well represented in the division. Blaze Sevigny, who wrestles for the American Outlaws club, finished third at 94 pounds. Cannon Zoss (fifth at 144), Evan Mitchell (fifth at 150), Evan Hirsch (sixth at 138) and Kale Hofer (eighth at 126). McCook Central/Montrose's Tucker Peterson finished second at 190 pounds and other top-five finishers include Bon Homme's Michael Branaugh (third at 106), Howard's Thomas Halverson (fourth at 215), MCM's Luke Horstman (fifth at 215), Parker Randall (fifth at 120), Canistota's Jack Conn (fifth at 138) and Parkston's Quayden Culbert (fourth at 157).

At the Junior boys level (age 17-19), Parkston's Wyatt Anderson won the title at 165 pounds, while Howard's Tate Miller finished fifth in the class. Other placewinners in the top-five included: Bon Homme's Alshamon Gunter (second at 215), Randall Powers (third at 285) and Cody Sassman (third at 190), Pukwana's Iden Myers (third at 157) and Marion's Keaton Preheim (third at 144),

The top high school girls finishers were led by Bon Homme's Peyton Hellmann winning the title at 145 pounds. Other placewinners included McCook Central/Montrose's Alexis Bryant (second at 125), Bon Homme's Hadlee Kracht (second at 130), Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes' Akane Metcalfe (third at 115) and Mitchell's Frankie Kranz (fifth at 120).
