‘I don’t want to forget a year ago. I want to learn from a year ago’ – Jimbo Fisher speaks at Dallas A&M Club

Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher has been making the rounds at various events over the last few weeks, and Wednesday night marked his final speaking engagement of the offseason with “Coaches Night” at the Dallas A&M Club.

As has been the case throughout much of the offseason, Jimbo shed light on the team’s struggles through last season’s 5-7 campaign while highlighting how it will serve as fuel for the coming 2023 season. Much of last year’s growing pains were a result of a lack of commitment and buy-in from the start, and that necessitates a shift in players’ mindsets.

Fisher noted that there has been a seismic culture shift through the spring, with players engaged and determined to build winning habits from the start, and that begins in practice.

The Aggies’ head coach also highlighted the sheer depth at both wide receiver and running back, while also giving praise to quarterbacks Conner Weigman and Max Johnson, who continuously work to make each other better.

Here’s the full rundown of everything Jimbo Fisher talked about on Wednesday night:

Jimbo emphasized the importance of changing habits in the face of pressure:

“When pressure comes in your life, you are going to revert back to what your habits are…you don’t do it until you do it right, you do it until you don’t do it wrong.”

Fisher highlighted the value of A&M's depth this season:

“We played a lot of young guys early, we brought back a bunch of guys.”

The leadership on display throughout spring has Fisher excited:

“What excited me the most this spring is the leadership we have on this field…everyone came to practice with a smile on their face.”

The Aggies are ready to use last year's struggles as fuel for 2023:

“I don’t want to forget a year ago. I want to learn from a year ago.”

Jimbo raved about the leadership from QB Max Johnson:

“The leadership and the role that he has on this team is amazing.”

Could the Aggies have a three-headed monster in the backfield?

“I’m really excited about our running backs room, Le’Veon Moss is really special, Amari Daniels is a really good player, and Rueben Owens came in and made an impact.”

Fisher continues to rave about WR Noah Thomas, who is expected to start this season:

“Noah Thomas had an OUTSTANDING spring.”

This year's squad is ready to execute and make A&M proud:

“What I like about our team is we have the right psychological disposition…guys realize we need to shut up and do the right thing and make the Aggie family proud.”

Texas A&M's wide receiver room is shaping up to be among the best in the country:

“Ainias Smith is a guy who always makes big-time plays in big-time moments, I think Evan Stewart is evolving into that type of player…Moose is also a guy who, at the end of the year, in the LSU made a lot of big-time plays.”

Through thick and thin, the 12th Man will always show up and represent A&M:

“The loyalty of the people at A&M and the genuineness of the people are the two biggest things…the atmosphere at the LSU game was the same as at the beginning of the year when we were undefeated.”

The rapport between this year's squad is robust, and it begins with a winning mentality in practice

“Every day when guys come to practice wanting to practice and happy to practice, it’s a great sign. There’s a lot of camaraderie.”

Conner Weigman and Max Johnson have continously battled and made each other better:

“Conner and Max have definitely set themselves apart, and it’s going to be a tough battle all the way.”

Fisher reiterated the importance of instilling good habits in his players:

“Your God-given gifts are great, but if you don’t have availability, accountability, and dependability, you won’t be able to use them.”

What is the common thread that connects successful people?

“It doesn’t take talent to give effort, it doesn’t take talent to be tough…grit is the most common denominator for successful people.”
