District girls basketball roundup: Central, Centennial claim quarterfinal wins, sets up showdown

Here's a roundup of district quarterfinals girls basketball games involving Treasure Coast teams from Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.

District tournaments will resume on Wednesday with semifinal games, followed by championship games on Friday.

District 7-7A

No. 3 Fort Pierce Central 40, No. 6 Treasure Coast 19: The Cobras have limited the Titans to less than 20 points in two of three games this season. The latest instance occurred on Monday from the Cobra Pitt.

Treasure Coast (13-13) did not score more than five points in a single quarter as Fort Pierce Central (18-8) extended its cushion in each frame.

Victorious in eight of their last nine games, Central plays on Wednesday at No. 2 St. Lucie West Centennial in a semifinal battle, which serves as a rubber game. The teams split their two regular-season meetings.

No. 2 St. Lucie West Centennial 79, No. 7 Jupiter 31: The host Eagles blasted the Warriors and set their season mark for points during a regulation game in the process.

As often as the offense lit up the scoreboard, Centennial’s defense was also unrelenting, limiting Jupiter to just four points in both the first and third quarters. Stats were unavailable.

The Eagles (14-9) have won three of their last four games.

No. 5 Vero Beach 49, No. 4 Palm Beach Lakes 38: Ekklesia Anderson and Amiyah Rodgers each poured in 15 points to guide the lower-seeded Indians to a road win over the Rams.

Leading 21-16 at halftime, the visitors gained control by winning the third quarter 19-7.

Anderson connected on 7 of 14 field-goal attempts to go with a team-high nine rebounds, four assists and steals while Rodgers went 6-for-8 shooting from the field while grabbing six boards, three steals and three blocks.

Camryn Reid added 10 points.

Vero Beach (12-8) plays Wednesday at No. 1 Palm Beach Gardens.

District 14-5A

No. 4 Jensen Beach 55, No. 5 Northeast 38: The Falcons used a huge third quarter to take care of business at home against the Hurricanes. Leading 26-17 at halftime, the hosts exploded for a 23-8 third.

With the win, Jensen Beach (13-11) clinched a non-losing season. The team’s reward is a date with top-seeded American Heritage. The two teams will play on Wednesday from Plantation.

District 13-5A

No. 1 Lincoln Park Academy 65, No. 8 Merritt Island 20: The top-seeded Greyhounds breezed into the semifinals following a dominant home display against the Mustangs.

After jumping out to a 22-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter, LPA put the game on ice by shutting out Merritt Island 17-0 over the next eight minutes.

Three players scored in double figures for the victors. Danielle Bell notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists and two steals. Lizzie Fitzwater and Christen Bell added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Next up for Lincoln Park (24-2) is a Wednesday home matchup with No. 5 Westwood, who advanced with an upset win at Okeechobee. The Greyhounds swept two regular season games against the Panthers, winning by an average margin of 41.5 points.

No. 5 Fort Pierce Westwood 48, No. 4 Okeechobee 44: Capturing their second road win of the season, the Panthers moved onto the next round with a narrow victory over the Brahams. Stats were unavailable.

Westwood improved its record to 6-16 this season while Okeechobee ended its campaign at 3-13.

District 8-3A

No. 3 Cardinal Newman 23, No. 6 John Carroll Catholic 21: The Rams’ campaign came to a close after dropping a low-scoring affair on the road against the Crusaders.

The teams matched each other in the second and third quarters, but Cardinal Newman prevailed after winning the first and fourth by a 3-2 margin. Grace George had eight points and seven rebounds to pace the winners.

Stats were unavailable for John Carroll (8-13), who dropped its final three games to finish the season.

District 14-2A

No. 3 Pine School 47, No. 6 Jupiter Christian 14: Eleven days ago, the Knights and Eagles shared the floor in a regular-season contest, with the former claiming a 14-point win.

Pine School more than doubled that outcome en route to a blowout home victory.
