MORENCI – Summerfield’s baseball team did not win a game last year until the District Tournament.

Now the Bulldogs are District champs.

“It’s definitely a big turnaround,” Summerfield coach Reid Olmstead said after capturing the title the Division 4 District at Morenci. “We had everyone back. It was huge for them to have another year of experience. That was a big advantage right off the bat. They were hungry and knew what they were doing.”

Junior Keegan Sieler had a big day on the mound for Summerfield.

He combined with Logan Keane for a 3-hit shutout with 9 strikeouts as the Bulldogs routed Morenci 14-0.

Summerfield trailed Britton Deerfield 5-1 in the fifth inning of the championship game when Sieler took over on the mound. He did not allow another run or hit, giving his team time to come back for an 8-5 victory.

“Sieler was huge for us,” Olmsted said. “He was great. The big thing was that he threw strikes for us.”

Bryce Kalb had three hits in the first game including a double and a triple, then had a hit in the bottom of the fifth in the championship game to touch off a three-run rally.

Sieler also had three hits in the first game while Keane and Jacob Wadsworth collected two each.

Reece Kalb had an RBI in the bottom of the sixth against Britton Deerfield to tie the game.

“It was awesome to see the kids not give up,” Olmstead said.

Summerfield (14-11) will play Camden Frontier in the Regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Morenci.

Milan makes finals

ADRIAN – Luke Gebhardt threw a gem as Milan beat Tecumseh 2-0 in the semifinals of the Division 2 District at Adrian Saturday, then the Big Reds fell 14-1 to the host team in the semifinals.

Gebhardt scattered four hits.

“He threw great,” Milan coach Adam Gilles said.

Matt Bowman and Tyler Hatfield drove in the Milan runs and Hatfield had two hits.

The highlight of the second game was a home run by back-up player Mark Reddock and two innings on the mound by Cody Wikarsyz, who has been out with an injury.

“That kind of made it fun,” said Gilles, whose team finished with a 19-13 record.

Dundee fell 3-0 to Adrian in the semifinals.

Chris LaFountain, Cooper Buhl, and Matt Atikinson had the only hits and Drew Bolster pitched well for the Vikings, who finished with a 22-16 record.

Carlson’s season ends

WOODHAVEN – John Hojnowski and Nico Reach pitched well and Matthew MacBride had two hits including an RBI single, but Gibraltar Carlson lost 5-1 to host Woodhaven in the Division 1 District semifinals Saturday.

“We could have played better,” Carlson coach Matt Kolak said. “It was a lack of execution on our end. We were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.”

Carlson finished with a 10-23 record.

“We definitely made some strides compared to last season,” Kolak said. “We had a lot of one-run and two-run losses as opposed to getting blown out last year. It’s baby steps.”
