Diamondbacks trade OF Hazelbaker to Rays for cash

The Arizona Diamondbacks dealt outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations on Tuesday.

Hazelbaker, 30, had been designated for assignment by Arizona on Friday to make room on the team's 40-man roster for right-handed pitcher Troy Scribner, whom the D-backs claimed as a waiver pickup from the Los Angeles Angels.

To make room for Hazelbaker on Tampa Bay's 40-man roster, the Rays transferred right hander Jose De Leon to the 60-day disabled list.

Hazelbaker was originally a fourth-round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2009, but he broke into the majors in 2016 with the St. Louis Cardinals -- and with a bang. He batted .317 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 23 April games that year, but he hit only seven homers the rest of the 2017 season, finishing with a .200 batting average or lower in three of the season's final five months.

The D-backs claimed Hazelbaker off waivers in November 2016, but he only played 41 games with Arizona last season, though he hit .346 in 61 plate appearances.

Hazelbaker will report to the Rays' Triple-A affiliate in Durham, N.C.
