Detroit Tigers at New York Mets postponed: Matt Manning called up for doubleheader Thursday

NEW YORK — Another day, another rainout in the Big Apple.

The Detroit Tigers and New York Mets postponed Wednesday's game, scheduled for 7:10 p.m., because of inclement weather at Citi Field in Queens, where there has been rain for the past two days.

The teams will play a traditional doubleheader on Thursday, beginning at 12:10 p.m.

The Tigers and Mets postponed back-to-back games Tuesday and Wednesday, creating the doubleheader Thursday. The Tigers beat the Mets, 5-0, in extra innings in Monday's series opener.

Right-hander Casey Mize is still scheduled to start Game 1 of the doubleheader.

It will be Mize's first start for the Tigers since April 14, 2022.

Right-hander Matt Manning — optioned to Triple-A Toledo at the end of spring training as the odd-man out in the rotation competition — has been called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Game 2 as the 27th player for the doubleheader. The 26-year-old threw five innings of one-run ball with one walk and seven strikeouts across five innings March 29 in his lone start for the Mud Hens.

The Tigers will play a doubleheader Thursday in New York, then fly to Detroit for the home opener at Comerica Park, scheduled for 1:10 p.m. Friday against the Oakland Athletics. Left-hander Tarik Skubal was supposed to pitch against the Mets, but now, he is lined up to start Friday's home opener.

Skubal, a Cy Young candidate, threw six scoreless innings with zero walks and six strikeouts March 28 on Opening Day, a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. After Skubal, right-handers Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty are lined up to start Saturday and Sunday, respectively, against the A's.
