J.V. REUNION? Justin Verlander says 'fate' will decide if he returns to Detroit Tigers before retirement

Game notes: For the third time in a little over a calendar year, the Detroit Tigers will face off against their old ace, Justin Verlander.

So much could be said about Verlander and his epic career with the Tigers. With a Cy Young award, an MVP, a Rookie of the Year and multiple trips to the World Series, there aren't enough seasons that Verlander could spend away from Detroit that would dampen his reputation. However, it's always a little weird to see him in Comerica Park sporting a non-Tigers logo.

Sunday will be the seventh time that Verlander will have faced the Tigers and the fifth time that it's been at Comerica Park. Two of those starts came last year, one during his short stay with the New York Mets and another with the Houston Astros after he was traded there midseason.

Much like his two starts last year, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for Verlander when facing the Tigers. In total, he has a 3-3 record, but some of that has been a bit of bad luck. He's got a 2.77 ERA and one of his losses came in a game in 2019 when he completed nine innings and gave up only two runs, but the Tigers, at the time just 38-87, came out victorious thanks to a ninth-inning home run by John Hicks.

Verlander, in just his fifth start of the year after an injury delayed his season debut, will certainly be hoping for better luck this time when facing off against Jack Flaherty on Mother's Day.

Although he's yet to get a win while wearing a Tigers uniform, Flaherty has been great since signing a one-year, $14 million deal this offseason. His best outing of the year came against his old team, the St. Louis Cardinals, when he struck out the first seven batters and finished with 14 total strikeouts, but the bullpen surrendered the one-run lead the Tigers had and gave away what should've been a win for Flaherty.

Verlander has not been as sharp as we've become accustomed to seeing while working back from a right shoulder issue, but if he can sort things out, we could be in for another low-scoring affair on Sunday.

After the game on Mother's Day, the Tigers will host the Miami Marlins for a three-game series at Comerica Park.
