Detroit Tigers send slumping Christin Stewart to Toledo; 'fun' call-up expected

Detroit Tigers outfielder Christin Stewart has been sent down to the alternate training site in Toledo, the team announced Tuesday night after an 8-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Comerica Park.

Stewart was replaced in the sixth inning for defensive purposes, as Derek HIll entered to play center field and Victor Reyes shifted to Stewart's spot in left field.

The Tigers will make a corresponding move Wednesday, and manager Ron Gardenhire said the player will be a "fun thing" for the fans — possibly alluding to Daz Cameron, Riley Greene or even another prospect.

Stewart slashed .171/.233/.317 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 33 games during the shortened 60-game season. He had 27 strikeouts to five walks. He is 2-for-17 in his last seven contests and 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored on Tuesday.

"I mean, he's not swinging," Gardenhire said Tuesday. "He's not getting hits."

Stewart was the Tigers' first-round pick (No. 34 overall) in the 2015 MLB draft from Tennessee. In 154 career games over three years, he has a .227 batting average, 15 homers and 59 RBIs — with 143 strikeouts and 49 walks.
