Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene to undergo season-ending right elbow surgery

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is scheduled to undergo right elbow surgery.

The 22-year-old, who hasn't played since Sept. 1 due to a right elbow sprain, will have surgery Wednesday in Dallas, performed by Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

Elbow surgery officially ends Greene's 2023 season.

The extent of the injury will be determined during the procedure.

Greene, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 draft, received three opinions on his right elbow once the inflammation subsided. The first opinion came from the Tigers' medical staff, followed by a second opinion from Meister. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers' team physician, provided the third and final opinion.

The Tigers plan to provide another update on the specific type of procedure, and the projected timetable for Greene's return, once the extent of the injury is determined upon the completion of the surgery.

Greene, who has suffered three injuries in the past two seasons, hit .288 with 11 home runs, 35 walks and 114 strikeouts over 99 games in the 2023 season. He suffered his right elbow injury on a diving catch in left-center field Sept. 1 against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Earlier in the season, Greene missed 34 games — from May 31 to July 7 — with a stress reaction in his left fibula.

He also fractured a bone in his right foot on a foul ball during a spring training game in April 2022 and didn't make his MLB debut until June 2022. The injuries have limited him to 192 games in his two-year MLB career.

After elbow surgery, Greene is scheduled to return to Detroit. He will stay with the Tigers for the final week of the season. The season finale is Oct. 1 against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park.
