THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE: Detroit Tigers prospect Jackson Jobe shows 'pretty special stuff' in Grapefruit League debut

Game notes: The MLB regular season is fast approaching, and after missing the entire 2023 season, former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize needs these final spring training starts.

So far, he's been working out some of the kinks, and that's not entirely surprising. He had multiple surgeries and hasn't pitched with the Tigers since 2022.

Mize impressed in the first two innings of his last start against the Baltimore Orioles, then faced some trouble in the third inning. But as he battles back from his injuries, that may be just what the doctor ordered.

"I thought it was good," manager A.J. Hinch said. "I think he had a step forward in stuff and execution. He got a little tired and made some mistakes, but it was a good spring training day for him."

Mize is scheduled to make his fourth start exactly two weeks before the Tigers open the season on March 28 against the Chicago White Sox.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will face Marcus Stroman in his first season with the Yankees after making the All-Star team while playing for the Chicago Cubs last year. Stroman had a 3.95 ERA but missed the entire month of August last year and never pitched more than three innings after an outing on July 15. However, Stroman has been impressive so far in spring training. He allowed two runs in 2⅓ innings in his first spring appearance, but then has had back-to-back shutouts over four innings in each of his last two appearances.

After facing the Yankees Thursday, the Tigers will split the squad up and play the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
