Game notes: Alex Faedo is showing some promising signs after two starts in the 2023 season. He has allowed five earned runs and has given up seven hits in 10⅔ innings pitched this season. However, in his last outing, he struck out seven batters — all on whiffs — and had just one walk, a sign of his increasing command.
Unfortunately for Faedo, a lot of his good work was undone by one pitch; a meatball crushed by Teoscar Hernández. The Tigers lost to Seattle, 5-0, last Saturday, but when Faedo returned to the dugout, the vibe was definitely positive.
FAEDO FINDING A GROOVE: Why Alex Faedo's performance gives Tigers boost of hope and an important lesson
“I thought he was really good,” manager A.J. Hinch said after the loss. “I thought it was a step forward for him.”
Now for Faedo, it'll be about building on the positives from this season and learning from the mistakes.
On the other side, the Tigers will be facing Patrick Corbin, a 33-year-old lefty with a 2-5 record this season. Corbin has had a losing record each of the past three seasons (2-7, 9-16, 6-19).
In his nine outings this year, Corbin has 31 strikeouts, while allowing 10 walks and seven home runs.
The good news for the Tigers is those who have faced Corbin have had success. Javier Báez is hitting .350 in 20 at-bats, including two home runs. Catcher Eric Haase and outfielder Matt Vierling also have home runs against Corbin. We'll see if that translates to more success for the Tigers on Saturday.
