FOLLOW ALONG: MLB trade deadline live updates: What to know about Detroit Tigers' approach, who may go

Game notes: The Tigers could have a very different team by the time they play the Pirates on Tuesday night. Roughly an hour before first pitch, the MLB trade window will come to a close, and with the Tigers currently 6.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins, it would make sense for them to unload some of their players with expiring contracts, particularly starting pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Lorenzen.

As other teams made moves around the league as the deadline approached, the Tigers stayed pat. They've been holding strong, hoping for an elite prospect in return for Rodriguez, who has a complicated contract that would allow him to opt in if he was injured, or become a free agent and potentially command more money.

Either way, by the time the Tigers face the Pirates, we'll know just how long they were able to hold out and what kind of return they were able to get for two strong starting pitchers who could help a team with their playoff push.

After the deadline, the show will go on and the Tigers and Pirates will play with the players still on their roster. Matt Manning will kick things off for the Tigers. The righty struggled in his last outing against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels but had looked great before that game, including his efforts in a combined no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 8. We'll see if it was just a tough matchup for Manning or if he has had a slip in form.

On the other side will be 25-year-old Johan Oviedo, who has a poor record but a decent ERA in 21 games this season. Oviedo has allowed three hits or fewer in his last three outings but has struggled a bit with command, allowing three walks or more in all those games. He has allowed 14 walks in the month of July.
