DEADLINE APPROACHING: Detroit Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez on trade chances: 'If it happens, it happens'
WEDNESDAY'S VICTORY: Miguel Cabrera, E-Rod deliver 3-2 win over Kansas City Royals
Game notes: The Tigers will have their All-Star on the mound for their series finale with the AL Central-worst Royals.
Michael Lorenzen was somewhat of a surprise pick for the All-Star game but did well in his short appearance. He followed that up with one of his best outings of the year against the Seattle Mariners, allowing just two hits and zero runs in 6⅔ innings pitched.
STICKY STUFF: Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson calls out Royals pitcher Jordan Lyles
Lorenzen will hope to continue that momentum in his second start after the break. His ERA is sub-four now after also not allowing a run in his start on July 6 against the Oakland Athletics; he hasn't allowed a run since June 30.
If he can continue to deal as he has recently, he will likely be a strong trade asset for the Tigers at the Aug. 1 deadline. Lorenzen signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Tigers before the season, meaning they could lose him for nothing if they are unable to trade him.
The Royals made the late announcement that veteran Zack Greinke will be taking the mound on Wednesday. At one time one of the best pitchers in baseball, Greinke is no longer what he once was. He's given up at least six hits in his last five starts, including an 11-hit game against the Cleveland Guardians on June 29. His last outing was on July 4 against the Minnesota Twins, a game he left early with a shoulder issue.
