Game notes: The Tigers return to Comerica Park after winning five of seven games on their road trip, helping them get the best road record in the American League since June 15.
Even still, the Tigers will be glad to be back home for an extended period for the first time since the All-Star break.
They start this seven-game homestand with a series with the talented but underachieving Padres. Many had high hopes for the Padres before the season after they signed Xander Bogaerts to a huge deal, teaming him up with a roster already loaded with big names like Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Juan Soto, and more. So far, it hasn't led to much success this year, as the Padres sit six games below .500.
The first pitcher the Tigers will see is veteran Seth Lugo, who has been fairly effective but hasn't picked up a win in his last seven starts. His last outing was against the Philadelphia Phillies, where he gave up seven hits and five runs.
On the other side, 23-year-old righty Reese Olson will be giving it another go. It'll be his 10th game in the big leagues and his seventh start (he came out of the bullpen for a few games to compliment Tarik Skubal in his comeback efforts).
In his short time with the Tigers, Olson has impressed. Over his last 12⅓ innings pitched, he has allowed just three earned runs and one walk. He's only had one appearance where he's allowed more than three earned runs and that was on June 14 against the Atlanta Braves, one of the best offenses in baseball. It was just Olson's third start.
He was handed the loss in his last game against the Seattle Mariners, a game in which he only gave up two runs but allowed six hits. Going forward, Olson will be looking to cut down on the home runs he's allowing. He has allowed five so far, all of them coming in starts.
