THURSDAY'S LOSS: Tigers strand too many runners in 7-4 loss to Orioles in series opener

Game notes: Thanks to the Tigers/Orioles sandwich (with a creamy Milwaukee Brewers filling, of course) handed to us by MLB’s schedule-makers, tonight’s game features another rematch of a pitching matchup from last weekend, won handily by the Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez.

In case you were otherwise occupied — pregaming for the Michigan Panthers’ game, perhaps — E-Rod retired the first 20 Orioles he faced before allowing a single to Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle with two outs in the seventh inning. (Gray-Rod, meanwhile, retired the first 0 Tigers he faced, giving up a leadoff single to Akil Baddoo.) E-Rod finished the inning without allowing a run to extend his scoreless streak to 17 innings: two innings against the Blue Jays on April 12, eight more against the Guardians on April 18 and then his seven innings against the Birds. It’s the longest scoreless streak by a Tigers starter since Tarik Skubal strung together 21 innings over five games last May.

As for Gray-Rod, we'll only point out that tonight is "90s Night" at Comerica Park; Baltimore's starting pitcher barely qualifies, as he was born on Nov. 16, 1999 — 46 days before the end of the decade.

After tonight’s game under the LED lights at Comerica Park — will we get a home run to trigger a light show AND the Tigers’ hockey-themed dugout celly? — the Tigers and O’s wrap up the series with a pair of day games, at 1:10 Saturday and 1:40 Sunday. Those will thankfully be the Tigers’ final games against a team from the AL East — which the Tigers are 1-11 against — until hosting the Toronto Blue Jays in early July. More immediately, the Tigers have Monday off before welcoming the New York Mets — featuring sticky Max Scherzer and, potentially for the first time this season, old friend Justin Verlander — for three games on Tuesday-Thursday
