Game notes: Rockies utilityman Harold Castro got the nickname “Hittin’ Harold” during his five seasons with the Tigers for a couple reasons. First, he had a knack for getting a single when the Tigers really needed one — such as, say, when they were being no-hit by Cleveland’s Triston McKenzie on Aug. 15, 2021. Over his Tigers career, Castro pumped out 326 hits while hitting .284: 48 doubles, seven triples, 15 homers … and 256 singles. Second, he rarely walked: Castro had just 50 free passes in 1,215 plate appearances — that’s a rate of one walk every 24.3 plate appearances.

With the Rockies, he has taken that to the next level; he’s hitting .274 in 174 plate appearances … with just five walks. That’s a rate of one walk every 34.8 plate appearances. If he keeps up that pace, he has a shot at turning in just the 15th season in the wild-card era— that’s dating back to 1995 — in which a batter with at least 330 PAs walked fewer than 10 times. Then again, he has some experience with it — Castro was also the most recent player to do it, walking just nine times in 369 PAs for the Tigers in 2019.

The Tigers, meanwhile, will face righty Connor Seabold. The 27-year-old has never faced any of the Tigers over his 23 appearances with the Rockies and the Boston Red Sox. Seabold was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017; at No. 83 overall, he was selected 26 picks after the Tigers selected outfielder Rey Rivera and 12 picks before the Tigers selected catcher Joey Morgan. Both Rivera and Morgan are done with baseball.

After today’s finale, the Tigers will have Monday off before opening a three-game series at Comerica Park against the Oakland Athletics, who have the worst record in baseball. The Rockies will also have Monday off before facing an AL West foe — they get the Astros in Houston for two games on Tuesday-Wednesday.
