TIGERS NEWSLETTER: Debating who will rep the Tigers in 2023 MLB All-Star Game

Game notes: After injuries to pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Alex Faedo, the Tigers have a hole in the starting rotation. The spot was down to Garrett Hill or Tyler Alexander, and the Tigers announced late Monday that they'd be going with Alexander, who has a career 4.73 ERA as a starter, compared to a 4.16 ERA as a reliever.

Expect Hill to get some innings, however; he made the Opening Day before being sent down because of control issues. He was recently recalled from Triple-A Toledo, where he posted a 4.78 ERA with 18 walks and 37 strikeouts across 26⅓ innings in 15 appearances (four starts).

On the other side, the Tigers will take on Taijuan Walker, who has a 5.65 ERA in 12 starts despite giving up three earned runs in each of his past two starts. The 11-year veteran signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Phils this offseason. Walker was teammates with the Tigers' Javier Báez for half a season with the New York Mets in 2021; Báez has one career hit off Walker in seven plate appearances, a home run in June 2021 just before he was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Mets.

The Phillies hammered the Tigers, 8-3, in Monday's opener. Nick Maton's three-run home run against his former team broke up Aaron Nola's no-hitter in the seventh inning. Trea Turner crushed Tigers pitching with two home runs among four hits.
