THURSDAY'S ACTION: Detroit Tigers' Kenta Maeda builds volume but not velocity in 5-4 loss to Toronto Blue Jays

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize pitches during the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida.

Game notes: Look, there’s a lot going on with the Tigers’ leadup to Opening Day — less than three weeks away! — but a major part of that is working Casey Mize (perhaps you remember him from the 2018 draft? Or from multiple surgeries since, keeping him out since April 2022?) back into the rotation.

This will be his third appearance of spring training. The first, on Feb. 27, was, uh, a little rough, with two runs allowed on one hit and two walks over 1⅔ innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. That featured 35 pitches, 17 of which were strikes. On Sunday against the N.Y. Yankees, however, Mize worked through two scoreless innings — again with one hit and two walks —while picking up 19 strikes on 38 pitches. He had one strikeout against the Jays, and two against the Yanks.

CARLOS MONARREZ: Spencer Torkelson's struggles, not his slugging, may be most valuable to Detroit Tigers

The latter appearance, while solid coming out of the bullpen following Matt Manning, was definitely marked by some wildness: "What I'm feeling is maybe excitement and adrenaline to play," Mize told reporters. "I just feel a little bit rushed, and this game is so incremental, so if I'm a little bit jumpy to the plate, that leads to a lot of high arm-side. I definitely got to do a better job of being within myself and staying connected on the mound."

The O’s, meanwhile, are a trendy pick to return to the playoffs — after winning the American League East last season with 101 victories. That’s in part thanks to a sneaky-good trade for right-hander Corbin Burnes to top the rotation — allowing tonight’s starter, Grayson Rodriguez, to settle into the No. 3 slot in his second MLB season — but also because of the team’s sudden willingness to promote its No. 1 overall picks … such as born-in-December-2003 shortstop Jackson Holliday (son of 15-year MLB vet Matt Holliday, in cause you needed to feel old on a Friday night). The 2022 top pick enters Friday with a .983 OPS in 22 plate appearances this spring. (The Tigers’ top prospect pushing for an Opening Day roster spot, Colt Keith, is positively ANCIENT — born in August 2001 — and is showing it with a .596 OPS in 18 plate appearances.)

After today, the Tigers get a break with a day game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, whom no one — outside of Allegheny County, at least — is picking for a playoff spot, at 1:05 p.m. back in Lakeland. The Orioles, meanwhile, head to North Port, Florida — which is, of course, south of Sarasota for a day game against the Atlanta Braves (themselves a trendy pick to win the whole dang National League).
