Detroit Tigers' Alex Faedo (hip), Kyle Funkhouser (shoulder) to miss rest of 2022 season

Detroit Tigers right-handed starter Alex Faedo, who underwent Tommy John surgery in January 2021, will miss the remainder of the 2022 season due to a right hip injury.

Faedo, the 2017 No. 18 overall draft pick, is expected to need a surgical procedure for the second time in less than two years. Right-handed reliever Kyle Funkhouser also requires surgery for his shoulder injury and won't pitch this season.

"It's trending towards that way," manager A.J. Hinch said. "I don't know if there's been an official decision yet, but I can't see how he would avoid it."

Faedo has a 5.53 ERA with 25 walks and 44 strikeouts over 53⅔ innings in 12 starts for the Tigers this season. He threw 60 pitches in his final game July 11 — serving as the 27th player for a doubleheader — and was crushed by the Kansas City Royals for four runs on four hits and four walks in 1⅔ innings.

Before that outing, Faedo pitched July 4 against the Cleveland Guardians — also serving as the 27th player for a doubleheader — and exited in the fourth inning with right hip soreness. Faedo made his MLB debut on May 4.

Funkhouser, 28, has not pitched for the Tigers this season. He suffered his injury in early March, during MLB's lockout, and failed to make significant progress during several throwing programs once spring training began in mid-March.

Matt Manning pitches for Toledo

Right-hander Matt Manning (right shoulder injury) completed his first rehab start for Triple-A Toledo on Friday. The 24-year-old, who hasn't pitched for the Tigers since April 16, allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts across 4⅓ innings.

He threw 47 of 70 pitches for strikes.

"He asked for the extra (inning), which is a good sign," Hinch said. "I know he felt pretty good. He was a little rough getting into his outing, but his stuff was fine and he responded to that pretty well and missed a few bats."

Manning needs one or two more starts with the Mud Hens before returning to the Tigers. He is scheduled to pitch Wednesday for Toledo.

Prospect starts rehab assignment

Infielder Ryan Kreidler (groin strain) began his rehab assignment Friday with High-A West Michigan. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and was subbed out of the game as a defensive replacement after striking out in the fifth inning.

There isn't a timeline for Krielder's return to Toledo, but once he's comfortable at the plate, the Tigers will promote him to the Triple-A level. He is the Tigers' No. 6 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and could join the Tigers once he is back to full health.

Kreidler hasn't played for the Mud Hens since June 23. Dating to April 26, he has played just 12 games in the minor leagues.

The 24-year-old missed most of May due to a hand fracture.

Austin Meadows isn't running

Outfielder Austin Meadows (left and right Achilles strains) is rehabbing in Lakeland, Florida, at the team's spring training facility, but he is not running. The Tigers won't have a timetable for his return until he can run. However, Meadows has been ruled out for the rest of July.

"Slow, steady progress," Hinch said. "He's doing some pool work. He's not running, but he's still hitting and throwing and doing some baseball activities. Without any running, it's impossible to think about what his return would look like. I know it's not going to be in July. Once he starts a running program, I'll have a better timetable."

Adding a veteran

The Tigers signed veteran right-hander Chi Chi González to a minor-league contract Friday and has been assigned to Toledo.

Earlier this season, González pitched two games (two starts) for the Minnesota Twins and four games (two starts) for the Milwaukee Brewers. He has a 6.87 ERA with four walks and 12 strikeouts in 18⅓ innings.

González has pitched for the Texas Rangers (2015-16), Colorado Rockies (2019-21), Twins and Brewers in his six-year MLB career. He owns a career 5.72 ERA with 116 walks and 167 strikeouts in 67 games (51 starts).
