Detroit Tigers acquire right-handed reliever Blair Calvo in trade with Colorado Rockies

MINNEAPOLIS — The Detroit Tigers acquired right-handed reliever Blair Calvo, who made his MLB debut earlier this season, from the Colorado Rockies on Sunday in exchange for cash considerations.

Calvo has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

The Rockies drafted Calvo in the 23rd round (No. 699 overall) in 2019 out of Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.

Calvo made his MLB debut for the Rockies against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 30 and tossed a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen. He retired all three batters he faced on 11 pitches.

Calvo also logged a 7.43 ERA with 10 walks and 32 strikeouts across 23 innings in 24 relief appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque. He throws a four-seam fastball, sinker, slider and changeup.

He was designated for assignment by the Rockies on June 15, three days before the trade to the Tigers.

Right-handed reliever Braden Bristo — claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on the first day of May — was designated for assignment by the Tigers to make room for Calvo on the 40-man roster.

Bristo posted a 7.64 ERA with 11 walks and 21 strikeouts across 17⅔ innings in 15 relief appearances for Triple-A Toledo.

The 28-year-old also allowed three runs (two earned runs) in two games for the Tigers. He most recently pitched Wednesday as the 27th player for the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves.
