Detroit Lions' fourth-down gambles pay off in 41-38 win over Chargers

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — After passing on kicking it all game, Detroit Lions placekicker Riley Patterson booted a 41-yard field goal at the end of the fourth for a 41-38 win on Sunday over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Going for it all afternoon, the Lions did so again on fourth-and-2 at the L.A. 26 with 1:47 remaining. Jared Goff hit Sam LaPorta for a 6-yard gain.

The Lions then ran out the clock and set up Patterson for the game-winning field goal.

Goff was 23-for-33 for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns and David Montgomery, in his first game back from a rib injury, had 12 carries for 116 yards and a 75-yard TD.

Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight catches for 156 yards and a score.

Justin Herbert hit Keenan Allen on a fourth-and-1 for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 3:34 remaining to tie the game. It was Allen's second TD of the game to go with 11 catchers for 175 yards.

Herbert was 27-for-40 for 323 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
