Detroit Lions get back on track with 42-17 win over Broncos at Ford Field

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta celebrates a touchdown against Denver Broncos with wide receiver Jameson Williams during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023.

The Detroit Lions offense got back on track in a big way before their home fans.

Jared Goff was 24-for-34 passing for 278 yards and five touchdowns, Lions rookie Sam LaPorta hauled in three of them, and fellow first-year player Jahmyr Gibbs each scored twice in the 42-17 win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday night at Ford Field.

If the Seattle Seahawks lose to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, the Lions (10-4) will clinch their first playoff spot since 2016.

After opening the game with three punts, the Lions scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions. The first four scoring drives ended with Goff TD passes. Amon-Ra St. Brown had seven catches for 112 yards and a TD, LaPorta had five grabs for 56 yards and Gibbs rushed for 110 yards on 11 carries and a TD and also had two catches for 8 yards and a score.

Russell Wilson was 18-for-32 for 223 yards and a touchdown. Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu had a sack-fumble, which was recovered by Isaiah Buggs.
