Despite late-travel adjustments, UNI wrestling earns conference dual win over Utah Valley

With some drama on if, when and where the dual would be held, Northern Iowa wrestling traveled to Ames on Saturday to wrestle Utah Valley in the Lied Recreational Center on Iowa State’s campus and picked up a 32-6 win.

The dual was originally scheduled to be wrestled at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, but the winter weather impeded those plans. Instead, the Panthers met Utah Valley in Ames, where the Wolverines wrestled on Friday night with no fans in attendance. Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser helped the dual happen by making the Cyclones' wrestling room inside Lied Recreational Center available for use.

UNI opened the dual with three consecutive wins from Trever Anderson, Julian Farber and Cael Happel. Anderson won with a singular escape in the third period, but both Farber (11-1) and Happel (14-4) picked up major-decision victories. Happel in particular had a great match, racking up four takedowns plus a stylish one in which Happel hit Haiden Drury like a freight train standing up and bringing him down for three points.

After Adam Allard dropped his bout at 157 to Isaiah Delgado, Ryder Downey picked up another major decision for the Panthers. RJ Weston followed at 165, riding his opponent Jaxon Garoutte for the entire second period to take control. He quickly escaped in the third, fired for a takedown and ended the match with a 5-1 win to make it 18-3 for his squad.

At 174, Jared Simma won in dramatic fashion (7-5 decision) by getting a takedown as time expired, getting his head from out of the legs of Caleb Uhlenhopp and up into control. 184-pound junior Parker Keckeisen followed with a technical fall (15-0) on nearly 4:00 of riding time for his 28th consecutive regular-season win.

Wyatt Voelker dropped a 4-2 decision to Evan Bockman to cap off the night, with 285 pounds forfeited in favor of UNI's Tyrell Gordon for the 32-6 win.
